Ben Stein: EXPELLED

A Review of Ben Stein's EXPELLED

Ray Campbell
I just returned from watching Ben Stein's new controversial movie, Expelled. This movie was made to ensure that that American people had a better understanding of both secular view of the origins of life including Darwinism, Neo-Darwinism, intelligent Design and Creation. There are proponents on each side of the equation, who adamantly adhere to their own beliefs and understanding of how life started on earth.

Ben Stein took a somewhat lighthearted approach to engage academia from both sides of the fence, to get their opinions, ideas, beliefs and understandings on the table. Mr. Stein interviewed many doctors and professors of universities, biological scientists, and population geneticists from around the globe.

In my opinion, the movie was very well done and outlined the belief systems and the contemporary views of both Darwinistic evolution and Intelligent Design (ID). Both sides had a great opportunity to voice their opinions and answer questions related to their beliefs and scientific evidence for each.

It was interesting to see the concerted effort to "expel" Intelligent Design proponents from the scientific community. There were several scientists who were employed at very high level positions that had the audacity to say that Intelligent Design should at least be considered as there is as much, if not more, evidence for the plausibility of ID than there is for the theory of evolution. However, even with the evidence, ID scientists are being shunned, ostracized, fired and harassed for their positions. They also regularly receive hate mail and e-mail because of their arrogance to go against the mainstream scientific community.

Towards the end of the movie, Ben Stein is interviewing Richard Dawkins, author of "The God Delusion", a self professed atheist who during the interview could not say that there is a 100% probability that God does not exist, and when questioned about the origin of mankind, gave a theory that "intelligent" life from another planet may have seeded mankind on the earth. So...in other words aliens created mankind on the earth?

I would encourage you to see this movie if you have an opportunity to. Very interesting and eye-opening to say the least and hopefully will cause more people to investigate the facts themselves. Not suggestions, opinions or thoughts...but the facts to the origins of life on our planet.

I saw the movie and have to say I came away feeling that both sides were not in fact fairly represented, rather the film operated under the basic assumption that intelligent design was somehow superior to the theory of evolution. Between the comparison of "Darwinists" (those who believe that theories of Charles Darwin to be accurate, not Darwin worshipers as the term seems to insinuate) to Nazis, ominous scoring that gives way to rapturous rock during Stein's speech, demonization and blatant editing of the extremely intelligent Richard Dawkins, and underlying theme that religious people are somehow oppressed in the scientific realm, it seemed to me that this movie has its mind made up before the opening credits.

I agree with you 100% that individuals should research the facts, or in the case of origin, evidence, but I just don't see this movie as providing an accurate view of either. However, I do hope as well that this movie causes individuals to want to research for themselves.

I find it odd that people are trying to introduce religion into science in the first place. Science stops being science when the answer to every question we don't have a logical explanation for yet is "God did it."
