Bench Press Techniques to Build Bigger Chest Muscles

Mention bench presses, and the very first thing that comes to most people's minds is building massive chest muscles. A possible explanation for this is because the bench press is probably the single most effective way to build Arnold Schwarzenegger-sized chest muscles, and its no wonder to see why bench presses have become so popular and common among bodybuilders.

Here are a couple of tips to keep in mind when bench-pressing, in order to maximize your chest building efforts.

1. Always Utilize a Wide Grip

The reason you need to use a wide grip when bench pressing is because, by using a wide grip you increase the stretch on your chest, thereby involving more muscles in the process. You should aim for a wider and wider grip, but take care to make this a slow process, because using a grip that's too wide might result in injury. You might want to consider doing a couple of warm-ups before you start your bench presses.

2. Lower The Bar Slowly

When you are bench pressing, make sure to lower the weights slowly to your chest, even though this might be a bit difficult, and you might have to sometimes drop the weights, there's actually a good reason for this. You see, since bringing down the bar slowly involves more effort on the part of your muscles, you'll end up building more strength and endurance, than you would if you had lowered the bar at a moderate rate.

3. Avoid Bench Pressing The Bar Directly To Your Chest

Lowering the bar directly to your upper chest causes strain on your rotator cuff and shoulders, and as you work up to heavier and heavier weights, you inadvertently increase the chances of you having a rotator cuff injury. The proper and safest way to bench press is to lower the bar to your upper chest, not only is this safer, it also strengthens your upper arm muscles.

A lot of times, most people get so caught up in how much pounds they can bench press, under the mistaken assumption that the more weight they can bench press, the faster they'll build their chest muscles, but the rate at which your chest muscles grow, depends not only on how many pounds you bench press, but on how effective your bench press techniques actually are.

So follow these 3 steps and you'll be way ahead of everyone else who's trying to build massive chest muscles using bench presses.
