Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar for Diabetes Patients

Prior Aphter

According to the American Diabetes Association over 25.8 million adults, or 10 percent of the population, in the United States suffer from diabetes while nearly 80 million individuals have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes. Not only does diabetes restrict on the type of foods you can safely consume, but it also significantly increases your risk of developing heart disease, kidney disease, neuropathy, high blood pressure and amputation. While the treatment of diabetes typically involves prescription medications and dietary alterations, proponents of organic apple cider vinegar claim this compound has multiple benefits for those with diabetes.

What is Organic Apple Cider Vinegar?

Organic apple cider vinegar differs from standard apple cider vinegar as it is not pasteurized, which is the process in which vinegar is heated to high temperatures in order to kill potentially harmful bacteria. Proponents of organic apple cider vinegar claim that the double-fermentation process this version of cider vinegar undergoes increases the production of various nutrients and enzymes known to support various bodily functions.

According to an article published by the Global Healing Center, the primary active compound found in apple cider vinegar is acetic acid; however, other constituents include potassium, pectin, malic acid, ash and calcium.

Organic ACV and Diabetes:

According to the diabetes-related scientific journal "Diabetes Care," researchers at Arizona State University gathered participants with and without diabetes, and at the conclusion of this study those with Type 2 diabetes experienced an increased sensitivity to insulin when compared to placebo groups. The study also found that overall insulin and glucose levels were reduced among those with diabetes.

Upon the conclusion of the study, researchers deemed that organic apple cider vinegar is just as effective as metformin for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes. However, further research must be performed to determine the true value organic apple cider vinegar has on diabetes patients.

Suggested Dosage:

Although there is no official dosage of apple cider vinegar for the treatment of diabetes, Dr. Edward Groups suggests combining 32 ounces of water with one tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar and drinking this solution once per day. While it is generally considered safe to consume up to 3 tablespoons of vinegar per day, talk with your doctor regarding the safety and suggested dosage of apple cider vinegar with your physician. This is especially vital if you are currently taking diabetes medications or have serious medical conditions.
