Why Breastfeed? Breastfeeding does so many things when it comes to giving your baby the very best. Immediately after birth, as long as baby and mom are healthy, the baby should get started learning to nurse. Make sure the baby is latched on properly or you run the risk of nursing being painful from the beginning. Don't give up if it doesn't happen right away or exactly as you imagined. First time moms can find it very frustrating and with all the post-birth hormones racing through their bodies, it can cause tears, or worse, the mom gives up after little effort. Most hospitals will have a lactation specialist on staff to assist with any questions or concerns. Use this valuable resource for as long as you are allowed!
There are so many ways that nursing will benefit your baby. Babies that are breastfed are given a headstart. It is a wonderful way for mom and child to spend quiet quality time together. That skin to skin bonding is important to a new babys emotional health. Breastfeeding exclusively for the first six months of a childs life helps the baby achieve optimal growth and development. There are several health problems that nursing reduces the risk of, such as Crohns disease, diabetes, and even asthma. Breasfeeding is also known for reducing the risk of SIDS.
Another great reason to breastfeed is the fact that not only is it always readily available for your baby, it is free! It has the perfect combination of fat, protein, and carbohydrates, most breastfed babies are less likely to be obese later in life. Breastmilk acts as a natural tranquilizer for both mom and baby. Your baby and you will sleep longer and better at night. A breastfed baby is never constipated and diapers are never stinky.
There are also less risk of food allergies. Most doctors will recommend breastfeeding for at least six months, while a year is best. The longer you nurse your baby, the better the health benefits. The World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding for TWO years or even longer. And while there are going to be people who will discourage you, or give you strange looks, keep in mind it is the best decision you can make. Plenty of stores and shopping centers provide a place for a mother to nurse her infant in peace and quiet. There really is no excuse, unless you are not physically able to. If you are going back to work, there are several great pumps out there you can use. And while you may not have that time with your child during the day, you can rest assured baby is getting the best nutrition possible and you will be able to spend that time with baby at bedtime!
There are so many more benefits to breastfeeding than I can list. For more information on the reasons a mom should breastfeed visit your local La Leche League website, or contact a Lactation Specialist!
