Benefits of Cross Training: Corporate Training

Melvin Richardson
There are a lot of benefits to cross training. Some companies will cross train as a means of cutting costs and expenses. If you have someone on staff that can handle two or three tasks then you may not need to hire someone for all vacant positions. One person can be rotated from position to position to handle all three positions. Employees are the largest expense an organization will incur.

An employee benefits because they become more valuable to an organization. If you can perform two or three job duties then whenever it's time for someone to get laid off the person that can perform multiple task is probably going to be one of the last ones to be laid off. If you cross train you put yourself in a position that allows you to be promoted. You gain a competitive advantage because you know and understand several job duties. If you ever want to move to another department and you have already been doing the tasks then the transition is a lot smoother. Management will more likely consider the person already cross trained as the chief candidate for that opening.

People who volunteer for cross training are looked at by management as a person who takes the initiative. When you volunteer to be cross trained it also shows that you are a leader, hardworking, dedicated and someone who is willing to do what it takes to get the job done. If someone is absent a person that has cross trained will be able to fill in even if only for a couple of hours per day until the absent employee returns.

Cross training can be stressful especially if you are consistently performing two job duties at the same time. You have to be able to do a number of things at once if you want to be successful. When you cross train there are other advantages such as being able to develop new relationships with a company. You widen your network and your area of influence.

Circulating through different departments gives you the rare opportunity to see how all departments within a company operate individually so that they can help an organization achieve overall company goals. You get a chance to see how all areas contribute to the whole. You also get a chance to see how departments operate and function together through teamwork and chemistry. Cross training should be one of the strategies you use to for long term career development. This is one avenue that you can pursue that will enable you to advance your career and go to the next level.
