Benefits of the CVS Green Bag Tag

Earn ECB with Green Bag Tag

Drew Taylor
It seems like every store now sells reusable shopping bags, but CVS takes it a step further by selling the Green Bag Tag. Available for 99 cents, the little leaf tag tallies the number of times you forego the plastic shopping bag and rewards you for doing so. The CVS Green Bag Tag has benefits beyond those listed on the product label. Find out if the CVS Green Bag Tag is right for you.

Earn Extra Care Bucks
Earning Extra Care bucks is the primary benefit of the Green Bag Tag. The cashier will scan your Extra Care card (or type in your phone number) and the bag tag each time you provide your own shopping bag or refuse a plastic shopping bag and carry merchandise. There is no benefit to owning multiple tags because you can only earn one bag credit per day. A $1 Extra Care Buck will print following the fourth scan.

The tally will show on the bottom of your receipt. If you registered your Extra Care card online, you can also log in to your account at CVS.com and view your current balance.

Reminder to Use Reusable Shopping Totes
You can attach the bag tag to a reusable shopping tote, but I find it easier to attach it to my purse. (The hanging loop is long enough to tuck the leaf tag inside my purse.) You can also attach it to your keychain. Using these methods keeps the tag in view and serves as a reminder to bring reusable bags in the store. It also gives you the flexibility of using any bag or your hands.

Help Support the World Wildlife Fund
CVS pledges to donate 5 cents for every bag tag sold between April 1, 2010 and March 31, 2011. The World Wildlife Fund will receive a minimum of $100,000. If customers purchase enough bag tags, the WWF will receive the maximum donation of $125,000.

CVS periodically offers coupons and Extra Care Bucks on the purchase of bag tags. With the coupon, I purchased a bag tag for 49 cents. Watch your receipts, in-store coupon machine and sales ad for savings.
