Benefits and Drawbacks of Water-Based Epoxy Paint

There are three types of epoxy paint. They include 100% solid, solvent-based, and water-based. Water-based varieties have a few advantages and disadvantages when compared to the other types. This article will discuss some of the benefits of using water-based epoxy paint.

Fumes

Solvent-based epoxies produce toxic fumes and smoke that's dangerous to breathe. Water-based epoxy paint doesn't cause these fumes. Therefore, you won't have to seal off the area you're working in and keep people away for days while the fumes clear.

Application

Another benefit of using water-based epoxy paint is that it's very easy to apply. This is quite important if you're a beginner or non-professional. You can apply it just like you would with regular paint. You can use a roller, sprayer, or brush to apply the pain.

Misc

Water-based epoxy paint is cheaper than solvent-based alternatives. It is also very easy to clean up if you make a mess. A simple solution of soap and warm water is usually enough to do the trick.

Disadvantages

Surface

As mentioned earlier, water-based epoxy paint is very easy to apply. However, it doesn't go onto slick surfaces easily like solvent-based paints. Water-based types can go on a wide range of materials though including concrete and plywood.

Environment

You will also find that the type of weather plays a role in whether to use water-based epoxy paint. It's best not to use it in cold weather. Conditions with high humidity levels will also cause problems. Neither high humidity or cold weather poses a problem with solvent-based paints.

These are some of the advantages and disadvantages of using water-based epoxy paint. It doesn't produce toxic fumes and is very easy to apply. However, you'll have a hard time applying it to slick surfaces. It is also best not to use it during cold weather or in an area with high humidity levels.
