Benefits of Eating Fruit for Cancer Patients

Julie Boehlke

Fruit has an array of health benefits and is beneficial for optimal health. It is part of one of the main food groups and provides a good daily source of dietary fiber, potassium and vitamin C. If you are battling lung cancer, eating fruit can help toward regulating your immune system, which could be compromised because of the types of treatment used to fight your disease.

Electrolyte Balance

Having a proper electrolyte balance is important for everyone, but especially lung cancer patients. Because your lungs and respiratory system may be compromised due to the effects of lung cancer and treatment, certain nutrients may be lacking--this could be due to poor diet or medication that depletes certain elements in the body. Your electrolytes consist of potassium, sodium, chlorine, bicarbonate, calcium and magnesium. Having the right balance in your body is essential to overall health as electrolytes affect the amount of water in your body, muscle reaction, heart function and blood acidity. Fruit such as pomegranates, bananas and figs are high in potassium and can help prevent levels from getting too low.

Immune System

There are two main types of cancer that originate in the lung--non-small cell and small cell, along with different classifications in each group. Sometimes cancer may originate in other areas of the body and spread to the lungs--this is referred to as metastasis. When you have lung cancer, it is essential to keep your immune system healthy, explains the Lung Cancer Alliance. A healthy immune system may prevent the development of new cancer cells in some cases, which could prevent them from spreading to other areas of the body. One way to keep your immune system going strong is to reduce stress and eat fruits which are high in vitamin C, including oranges and grapefruits.

Juicing

If you have suffered from certain side effects related to your lung cancer such a tracheotomy or mouth sores related to treatment, you may find it difficult to swallow certain foods. In order to reap the health benefits of your daily fruit intake, you can try juicing. Juicing involves taking your favorite fruits and turning them into juice or puree. This allows you to easily swallow the fruit and create your own drink. If you are underweight, you can add protein powder or additional nutrients to increase calories. Note that with juicing you may lose important nutrients that are found in the skins and seeds of some fruit.

Organic Fruit

Choosing to consume organic fruit while going through lung cancer therapy may be beneficial. If you are looking to avoid additional chemicals, preservatives and pesticide exposure in your fruit, fruit that is grown organically is a dietary option. The Health Action Network Society reports that in some cases, an organic diet of fresh fruit and vegetable may contribute to improved health with lung cancer patients. Consuming organic fruit can also help fight off infection and give you more energy because of consuming less toxins and chemicals, explains Organicfoodinfo.net.
