Benefits of Getting a Degree in Education Online While Working Full-time

Nina Rotz
In 2001, I faced the problem of having to pay for a college degree without any assistance. As all fees had to come out of my pocket, working full time and attending some of the courses online was the only option. Obtaining a degree online allowed me to finish my degree and I was able to afford it. While my degree was not in education, I do understand the benefits of getting a degree online while working full-time.

I have considered going back to school for a degree in education or a teaching certificate, as I have always enjoyed being around kids or being an instructor. As a mother, wife and a business owner, my only option to receiving an education degree or a teaching certificate would be through an online program.

Through my previous online course and distance learning experience, I know the benefits of receiving a degree online while working full-time. It was a pleasant and easy experience for me, and something I'd recommend to anyone trying to obtain a higher education.

More Education Is Always A Good Thing

No one will ever say that education or an additional degree is a bad thing. Choosing to go back to college can be due to many reasons, such as wishing to fulfill a lifelong dream or wanting a career change. An online degree in education will have the same value as a traditional college course.

Getting A Degree On Your Own Time

One thing I really liked about an online education is scheduling my lesson times and working schooling times around my free times. While working full-time to pay for school and bills, I was able to work assignments around my schedule. Our lesson plan included dates of when assignments needed to be turned in, and when testing would be done.

A Good Reason For A New Laptop

It is the little perks in online courses that can keep you motivated. I was able to purchase a brand new laptop at the time, for sole purpose of turning in assignments and doing my research. At the time, I was also able to write my laptop off in taxes because it was related to obtaining an education.

Laboratory Time Was Pre-Scheduled

Our lab times were pre-scheduled and were provided ahead of time in lesson plans. A degree in education will likely require classroom time with children and in school settings. In my experience, our lab times were not as frequent or as time consuming.

Material Provided For Online Courses Is Helpful

I was surprised by how much material was provided to me for my online courses. Everything was mailed to me, including CD-ROMs, books and glossaries. Compared to my previous classroom courses, the material given for online degree was more helpful and in-depth.

Online Degree Does Not Mean You Are Alone

In fact, I was given several methods to receive fast answers to my questions. My online courses had instructors who were available at any time over telephone, e-mail or through Blackboard. If there was ever any questions or concerns, answers were provided quickly and were actually in-depth explanations. I appreciated the fact that my instructors took such care and time towards providing me with help.

Blackboard Use Is A Must

Blackboard is an online system many colleges use, and they are exceptionally helpful when trying to obtain an online degree. Through this system, students receive notices, announcements and any lesson plan changes. There are also networking options through class message boards where you can discuss class material or ways to comprehend assignments.

Ability To Meet Up With Other Students

Just because you go to school over the computer does not mean you cannot meet fellow classmates. We were in fact given opportunities to meet up in school classrooms for study groups or even to include our instructor in online degree discussions.

Cost Of Online Degree Is Less

Compared to my traditional university courses, online or distance learning classes cost much less. The cost was very important to me as not only a college student but someone who had to pay for school out of pocket. Not to mention, I still had regular bills to pay such as rent and utilities out of pocket. Paying less for a good education is beneficial to an average person.

Career Advancement In Education

Once your teaching certificate or online education is complete there are more chances to advance your career. A career advancement means having more valuable skills, as well as more education that will pay off. When interviewing for a teaching job you will have more value to your name.

Pursuing an online degree in education can have costs, but it will be easier to time manage as you are not tied to a classroom desk. In my experience, obtaining an online degree was pleasant and I was able to manage a full-time job with school. Becoming a teacher through an online degree in education has several benefits, including schedule flexibility allowing you to get a teaching degree online while working full-time.

I think online degrees are great, but as a teacher I would recommend taking every opportunity possible to work with students and collaborate with colleagues in person if you are going to take the online route. So much is learned by working directly with the children and teamwork is key between successful teachers. If you can make sure those bases are covered, you'd do great! Good article. :)

Yes, key is motivation. I had to kick myself a few times to turn things on time, but overall I loved the experience.
