Benefits to Learning Spanish in the Workplace

"Prensa dos para el espaol"

How many times have you heard that when you call a 1-800 number to get your credit card balance? Or when you want to pay your cable bill?

It's inevitable...English may be the language of the US but Spanish is the language of the workers of the US. The benefits of learning Spanish could be huge, depending on the industry that you are in. If you are in sales, learning Spanish could mean gaining 10 customers simply by overcoming the language barrier. If you are in any growing industry, the chances are, you will come across someone who speaks Spanish and very little English. I should also mention what a great resume buffer it is to have a "Languages" section on there where it shows that you are, at the very least, bilingual.

If you are in a business where there are many international aspects to it, learning Spanish could put you ahead for a competitive position and give you a possible promotion (Such as a law firm or a trade-heavy industry)

If you are in health care, knowing Spanish could mean a life or death matter when it comes to the ER or finding out a patient's history when it's time for surgery.

If you are in retail, especially in big retail stores such as Walmart or KMart, it could help you communicate with your customers a lot better so that the other cashiers (or you) are not frustrated when a customer is trying to complain to them.

If you are in education, it could help you communicate better with the parents of your students, instead of trying to track down the Spanish teacher to help you write a letter to the parents concerning their child's future.

If you are looking to earn extra money on the side, go on craigs list and look at how many translators are needed. Pick up a second language, pick up extra cash. That does not sound bad at all! It could even get you a job translating a huge website for their "Espanol" version and picking up a fantastic freelancing job. The possibilities are endless.

There are plenty of benefits to learning Spanish to enhance your life, your resume and your salary.

Who knows? It could mean your next big break.

Don Italo, that will be taken into consideration.

Scott, that situation is the perfect example to how Spanish has become an integral part of our society as a second language...but the question remains...does it stop with Spanish as the country becomes more diversified?

    Cassie...LOL...I love you

It should be mentioned that Spanish is the second most prolific native language in the world.

    And it's sexier.

My friend, Ray, is a nurse at John Hopkins. We were on a street corner chatting once when a Latino guy got a lil swipe on his bicycle from a car. He was ok, but we only knew that for sure because Ray is from LA and knows Spanish. The cops and an EMT came to the scene, but neither of them knew Spanish. I'm glad Ray was there; not only was she effective as a linguist/translator, but her career field was also helpful. She was perfectly suited for the situation.
