Benefits of Museum Membership

Eric Bailey
The value of being a museum member can be a difficult idea to understand. After all, in an era where innumerable tomes of information are instantly available on the internet, and creative minds have labored to provide the most cutting-edge styles of entertainment imaginable, why should anyone bother with visiting museums anymore?

The traditionalists will point to the fact that a proper museum will have exhibits with genuine artifacts that patrons can see, in person, in real perspective, rather than merely viewing them on a screen in a photo. The value of this experience can lend to an enhanced appreciation of history, and thus of our current lives. Curators and other museum workers dedicate their occupations toward giving visitors the most enjoyable and rewarding experience possible. For children, a trip to the museum can be an engaging, hands-on, dynamic way to interact with interesting new items and learn amazing facts that they otherwise would not encounter. But even among those who enjoy an occasional visit to the museum, the value of being a member can still escape them. Is it really worth it to visit the same location multiple times in a year? When all aspects are considered, the answer is that yes, it potentially can be, for a few key reasons.

Total Exhibition Experience

Any decent museum has exhibit halls that rotate their attractions. While certain mainstays, especially larger artifacts, may be permanent exhibits that are classics and will still be there for generations to enjoy, other attractions serve a temporary role before phasing out in favor of a different draw. This can happen every few months, at multiple posts throughout the complex. A trip to the museum in March may see a few completely different areas than the visit will in October.

Being a museum member adds the value of being able to partake in and enjoy all of these exhibits, including the rotations, thus not only adding onto an already rich experience, but ensuring that in the resultant variety, not a shred of detail is missed.

Monetary Savings

This is the benefit that may be most heavily promoted by the museum itself: The fact that, with a membership, a person can typically save money, provided they visit multiple times within a year. In other words, many memberships pay for themselves (against the costs of visiting as a non-member) within just two trips, and the value begins to stack up more impressively for true fans of the scene.

Socialization

After all is said and done, though, perhaps the most provocative value of being a museum member is also the simplest: A trip to the museum is a fun time. It is a learning experience best enjoyed by friends and family, and being a member means that every time you go, you can bring a different crowd; your friends one time, your family another, a nice trip with the kids once, then a guys or girls day out the next opportunity. Like most other bits of life, it is what you make of it; so for anyone holding a membership card, that may potentially be their ticket to some truly memorable times.
