Benefits of Single-Sex Colleges

Shouldn't You Consider Single-Sex Colleges as Well?

Laura Fleenor
As a college student, it can be very beneficial in choosing a single-sex college or university in many different ways. Though single-sex colleges and universities are not the choice for your average college student, they should be given some consideration, before making the final decision on where you will be getting your education. Choosing a single-sex college or university can have a major impact on the quality of education an individual receives, and the focus an individual can maintain,on their studies.

In your average co-educational college or university, many students become side tracked by members of the opposite sex, and often times, their studies begin to suffer. By choosing a single-sex college or university, you eliminate the distractions that members of the opposite sex can often cause. At a traditional college individuals often times get caught up in trying to impress members of the opposite sex, and start behaving in ways that they normally would not.

Same-sex colleges and universities typically have a far lower rate of drug and alcohol abuse, in that students are more focused on learning all they can instead of partying all they can, though you will still be able find drug and alcohol abuse in every college or university setting, however minimal it may be. Many young college girls participate in drug and alcohol use, due to the pressures of the male students that they are trying to impress or win over, and with single-sex colleges, you eliminate the male factor, thus eliminating a major cause for drug and alcohol experimentation.

Single-sex colleges and universities are also beneficial when it comes to learning about or participating in subjects or events that are stereotypically made for the male gender. These things could include many different types of sports, and also several different types of technical careers. For instance, when you think of an electrician, you typically think of a male, and with single-sex colleges, a female can learn about these things without getting the feeling that she does not belong there.

Single-sex colleges and universities have many beneficial attributes, and should not be ruled out before choosing a college or universities to attend. Though there are many college student that would absolutely forbid you to send them there, there are others who are more interested in their future success that may feel like it is a great idea.
