Social networking sites also serve as virtual scrap books where photos and videos can be posted. A social network can become a conference room to discuss matters of importance or points of interest. More and more social networks are even being used to find romance and love.
Social networking sites hold many benefits for reasons both public and private.
Social networks are a benefit to society because they allow more than ever people to stay in touch and communicate over vast distances. Members of social networking sites are free to invite others as friends which allows profiles to be viewed, pictures and videos shared, chat sessions started, or quick comments to be sent out. Social networks allow people to stay in touch with people who usually would not have been called. Let's face it, we make a lot of friends and buddies over the years and keeping in touch with all of them can be difficult, but social networking makes it easy. With social networking, sending a long lost buddy a "how you been?" is easier than ever. For those of us who hate calling a person on their phone out of fear of being a bother, social networks are the perfect solution. With social networks, the other person you're communicating with doesn't even have to be online. Similar in concept to e-mail, a person is able to check their messages and updates to other people's profiles by logging on with their own user name and password. This means that a person will never have to worry about bothering an old friend with a morning greeting because the other person will only log on to check their messages at a time when it is convenient for them.
Social networks are also changing the way that businesses operate. Businesses are learning how to turn their social network profiles into virtual billboards advertising services, pitching the product, and listing contact information. Frequent buyers or clients of a product or service even have the option of becoming a friend of a private business on a social network which allows the business to update all of its followers with information which they may find important, like the date of the next sale or a new item introduction announcement. Companies can also use social networks for internal operations. Social networks usually allow members to form private groups or clubs in which members can meet in private to discuss common matters. Working groups and project teams separated by miles are able to hold meetings in cyber space in order to accomplish company goals.
No matter the purpose for wanting to maintain contact or come together with friends or colleagues, social networks make the entire process easier, more convenient, and cheaper. Free social networks have the potential to bring down phone costs, travel costs, and even over time costs.
The benefits of social networks should not be ignored. As technology continues to develop more and more uses for social networks will come along.
As for those lucky enough to have witnessed the social network revolution first hand, just imagine how we're going to communicate in another century.
