Benefits of Taking Risks

Ana Godrej
Risks form the adventurous aspect of our otherwise dull and boring existence as they reflect the daring in us to try something different. The idea of taking risks does not appeal to everyone, but those who truly believe in reaching for the sky often realize early in their lives that it would be impossible for them to do so if they do not take any risks. Some people may be scared to take risks for the fear of failure where as for others it forms the very essence of entrepreneurship, that is, one can achieve the impossible only by snapping out of one's present condition and play a few gambles. The maximum that can happen is failure, but those who are bold enough to take risks do not get intimidated by the mere fear of failure.

As remarked wisely, failures are the stepping stones to success; if you fail in your attempt to achieve, you will emerge from the experience as a wiser, smarter and more knowledgeable person. Having encountered failure once, your chances of success would be higher at the next attempt because not only would you be cautious about the mistakes that you committed the first time round, but you would also be in a position to make a better choice regarding the methods and strategies to be used. Therefore, you would be better prepared to face the obstacles and challenges that lie ahead on the road to glory.

Though, indulging in risks does not mean that one should throw caution to the winds and jump at each and every opening. It is extremely important that in addition to taking risks, one should ensure that they are calculated risks, which would enable you to inch closer towards your goal rather than wild conjectures which would leave you worse than what than what you were before. People may prefer to lead a stable, predictable and risk-free life, but such people never get to taste the fruit of fulfilment as they have never ventured beyond their known parameters to explore the unknown. A true adventurist is the one who keeps to his path even in the face of danger and he also possesses the tenacity to stick to his goals in spite of repeated setbacks. As quoted by Soren Kierkegaard,

"During the first period of a man's life, the danger is not to take risk."

This statement echoes the philosophy that the younger you are, the more willing you are to take risks. An individual possesses more bravado at a younger age to try new things explore hitherto untouched areas. The youth also has plenty of time in which to make errors and learn from them; nevertheless, they would do well to take advice from their more experienced elders so as not to let their time, energy and resources go waste by taking unwarranted and unnecessary risks.

Risks have granted freedom to many human beings who hail from politically disturbed areas such as Cuba, Afghanistan, Palestine and the northern states of Africa. It is by risking their lives as well as the lives of their loved ones that they have managed to escape from the tyrannies of their oppressive rulers to settle down in a more stable environment and carve a bright future for themselves as well their progeny. Undertaking risks has proved worthwhile for them as it would prove for anyone willing to step out of the drudgery of their monotonous life and make an attempt to realize their dreams.
