Benefits of Using Electric Radiant Floor Heating for Cold Rooms

Scott Kessman

Electric radiant floor heating is a good for warming up floors that are difficult to warm up in other ways. Electric radiant floor heating uses electric panels fitted under the floor which direct heat through it.

Electric radiant floor heating comes into its own in the winter months when conventional heating systems struggle to warm up cold floors and walls. Electric radiant floor heating is ideal for heating floors that that are susceptible to cold like tiles, laminates and stone.

Electric radiant floor heating systems direct heat through the floor. Using a process called radiant heat transfer, electricity warms up the floor that then radiates heat into the room. This is also sometimes referred to as infrared radiation.

Electric radiant floor heating systems have electric resistance heating cables fitted under the floor that are connected to an electric circuit. When the system is turned on, heat from the cables warms up the floor. It usually takes about half an hour to heat up the room fully and after that the temperature level is controlled by a thermostat. You can also adjust the temperature to how you want it.

Electric radiant floor heating is often installed when a new floor is laid in a room. The first step is to lay down the heating cables and then pour cement onto them. When this has set, it forms a slab with the cables inside it that provides a solid base for your flooring tiles.

Electric radiant floor heating has many benefits compared to conventional heating systems. The main benefit of electric radiant floor heating is that it is much more energy efficient as heat is transferred directly without any being lost. It is also easy to install and operate.

For the biggest energy savings, you need to get an electric radiant floor heating system with a large thermal mass that you can then set for off-peak hours. With a large thermal mass electric radiant floor heating system, the stored heat will be more than enough to heat up your floors for eight to ten hours without having to turn the electricity on again.
