In addition to print catalogues, most businesses now have their catalogues online. With online catalogues, all of the company's products can be shown, in every color, size, and style that they come in. This is something that is simply unachievable with the physical counterpart.
In the past, there had been a general criticism of print catalogues for not being able to show everything, but having the Internet allows businesses to address this criticism and turn it into a strength. Since somebody can get everything they need online, what is the point of spending money to continue producing a print catalogue? The most important reason is that it instills consumer confidence, as companies that have these kinds of catalogues are usually seen as more professional and aged. Another, less important reason is that people can look at products from anywhere, even if they do not have a computer around. All of this is not just speculation; customer feedback on various websites shows that printed catalogues are still very much in demand. Also, the "Request a Catalogue" page shown on many home shopping websites is considered classic and characteristic by many consumers.
Businesses that originally only used print catalogues are seeing new growth by adding an online store. The reason businesses that add an online store after having a print catalogue do so well is because they already have an established customer base and reputation. Doing it the other way around, having an online store and then adding a printed catalogue, does not have as large an effect, although it still is a great way to create customer confidence.
The capabilities of online catalogues are ever growing. As stated, there are several things you can do online that you cannot do off the computer, such as zoom in on products, rotate them, or quickly switch between different colors. Online retailing has evolved over the years, as when it first started out it was not very efficient (there was not even a widely used payment processor like PayPal that is in use today). By utilizing the benefits of online catalogues, while cashing in on the traditional nature of print catalogues, a business can grow much larger than by just using one or the other.
