Berkeley, CA Tells Marines They Are Unwelcome Intruders

Bigoted and Ungrateful, Who Do They Think Served and Died to Give Them Their Rights?

Donna H. Davey
There comes a time with enough is enough, and this is when the apathetic let extremists take the reigns, and when intolerance renders itself into full-fledged hate.

Berkeley California comes to mind as such a place. No longer content to be just an eyesore, the Berkeley City Council voted 6-3 to tell the Marines their downtown recruiting station is not welcome. To add further insult, the Marines were told, "If recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited and unwelcome intruders."

Intruders? Since when are the Country's defenders and guardians, intruders in their own Country?

The Berkeley City Council may be bigoted, I would even go so far as to say traitorous, towards the people who sacrifice so they can freely sit on their intolerant rear ends while marinating in their own ungratefulness, but the passivity of others is even worse. Apathy, and a few fanatics, put people like that in power.

To give another example of such blind power, the council voted 8-1 to give Code Pink a designated parking space in front of the recruiting station once a week for six months and a free sound permit for protesting once a week from noon to 4 p.m.

Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates proclaimed, "I believe in the Code Pink cause. The Marines don't belong here, they shouldn't have come here, and they should leave."

I wonder who he would like to come to Berkeley's aid should an emergency, natural disaster or terrorist attack occur. Will Code Pink put down their bull horns and refrain from their harassment to lend strong and courageous assistance? If Tom Bates, and those that agree with him, find the Marines so unwelcome, perhaps they will find federal funds and aid unwelcome too.

I'm still wondering where the ACLU is, or those that scream about the big, bad government violating rights. Wait, I forgot; that kind of defense only extends to them and not those who serve our Country and protect its citizens.

U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C. had this to say:
This is a slap in the face to all brave service men and women and their families. The First Amendment gives the City of Berkeley the right to be idiotic, but from now on they should do it with their own money. If the city can't show respect for the Marines that have fought, bled and died for their freedom, Berkeley should not be receiving special taxpayer funded handouts. I am currently drafting legislation to ensure that American taxpayers aren't forced to pay for this insult by rescinding all of the earmarks for Berkeley in the Omnibus Appropriations bill, and to transfer the funds to the Marine Corps."

I'd take my stuff and leave, and don't expect me to come running when a terrorist takes you out. You'll be on your own. I'm not welcome, remember? I say, let the marines pull out of Berkley. I think the Army, Navy, Air Force, National Guard, Coast Guard and Army Reserve, should also pull out. Berkley should have to pay any citizen who wants to move to another city, due to the armed forces ban, fair market value for their house if they have one, and for living expenses for at least 4 months. Then when there is a major flood, fire, land slides, war on our soil, or another terrorist attack, anything that the armed forces are used for if it happens in Berkley, they are on their own. Maybe they can cede from the union.

Please pardon the comma error in the third paragraph. For a video clip of Gold Star mother Debbie Lee addressing the Berkeley Council, please visit this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6VeLpMloUs

Great reporting. Had this been a case of marines trashing the town or something like that, they may have had a case. But to outlaw those who passively provide recruiting assistance to those who want it? Outrageous.
