Red, White and Blue - Brian McKnight A really touching tribute to our fighting men and women.
Lyrics (all lyrics courtesy of lyrics.com):
I fight for what's right and I fight for what is true,
Mostly I'm fighting to get back to see you.
We don't see black, we don't see white, we don't see what we have to do,
All we see is our red, white and blue, fighting for our red, white and blue.
The Stars and Strips Forever - John Philips Sousa Nothing like a rousing symphony to get the patriotic blood pumping!! Love those piccolos!!
This Ain't No Rag, It's a Flag - Charlie Daniels Charlie Daniels states his patriotism with strong words...not for the faint-hearted or politically correct, but definitely pro-America!
Lyrics:
This ain't no rag, it's a flag
Old Glory red, white and blue
The stars and the stripes when it comes to a fight
We can do what we have to do
Our people stand proud
The American crowd is faithful, loyal and tough
We're good as the best and better than the rest
Born in the USA - Bruce Springsteen It's a classic and it gets people movin!' And don't we all already know the lyrics? Okay, just a few lines:
Born in the USA, I was born in the USA.
Born in the USA, I'm a long gone daddy in the USA
An American Child - Phil Vassar Great contemporary song about growing up in the USA.
Lyrics:
My grandfather would have been eighty today
But in '45 he fell down beside an American child
An American child
Oh, an American child
'Cause dreams can grow wild born inside an American child
An American child
Song of the Patriot - Johnny Cash and Marty Robbins You can listen to this one at this website: http://www.ilovewavs.com/Holidays/July4/july4.html
Star Spangled Banner - Jimi Hendrix No lyrics, just great guitar - an incredibly American way to listen to the National Anthem. To steal a line from SpongeBob: "Rock on Freaky Dude!"
Living in the Promised land - Willie Nelson I guess country singers have a strong sense of citizenship.
Lyrics:
Livin' in the Promised Land
Our dreams are made of steel
The pride of every man
To know how freedom feels
There's a winding road, across the shifting sand
And room for everyone, livin' in the Promised Land.
God Bless the USA - Lee Greenwood You cannot go through 4th of July without listening to this song. Seriously...it would be un-American.
Lyrics: (feel free to sing along, I know you know this song)
And I'm proud to be and American
Where at least I know I'm free
And I won't forget the men who died
Who gave that right to me
Battle of New Orleans - Johnny Horton Did anyone else's Grandpa sing this to them? Mine did, every week on the way to the public pool. I miss it. Really fun song, super old!!! Kids love it!
Lyrics:
In 1814 we took a little trip
Along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip
We took a little bacon and we took a little beans
And we caught the bloody British in a town in New Orleans
Likely Page BreakPreamble - School House Rock Remember Saturday morning cartoons? These were the little educational cartoons that played in between the cartoons. This is an awesome way to teach kids and most 40 year olds will sing along, cause it's how we got an A in history class!!
Lyrics:
We the people
In order to form a more perfect union,
Establish justice, insure domestic tranquility,
Okay, these last ones are a bit off the beaten path, but let's cover all the bases:
Hey Baby, It's the 4th of July Not necessarily the most patriotic, but it has a good beat and it says "4th of July" in the chorus...check it out here: http://kennethinthe212.blogspot.com/2006/07/hey-baby-its-4th-of-july.html
Declare Independence - Bjork Not my cup of tea, but maybe she's yours! The song is direct and to the point, though not very melodic. Kind of robotic.
Lyrics:
Declare Independence
Don't let them do that to you
Declare Independence
Don't let them do that to you.
(Wow Bjork...Deep.)
So...that's just a start, there are a hundred more patriotic and fun songs out there for 4th of July celebrations, classics like This Land is Your Land, even one by Bon Jovi called Undivided (definitely gotta be a Bon Jovi fan for this one). The key is to mix it up so there's something for everybody, even the freaky neighbor next-door who always seems to crash the party. All you got to do now is put the needle on the record, yo. Have a happy and safe 4th of July!!
