Best Add-On Applications for Your PDA or Device

Ryan Mooney
If you have a PDA or device, you're probably aware that there are a vast amount of applications and programs available for download and installation (most even free of charge). However, it is highly likely that your device does not have unlimited memory for hundreds of application. So how do you determine the junk from the cream of the crop? I've installed and removed many applications over the past couple of years on a variety of devices (BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, and Samsung). Now you can learn from my mistakes and successes when you start to search for those unique, fun, and helpful tools to make your mobile experience greater (all below are free of charge).

Gmail
No longer must you sift through a text message inbox or view your e-mails in that oh-so archaic format that most devices default to. The Gmail application has arrived and comes loaded with an unmatched mobile e-mail experience. I highly recommend downloading the mobile Gmail application. E-mail syncs up quickly, displays superbly, and can be easily managed with just a couple clicks of the keypad. Google has found a way to create a very clean, simple, yet advanced mobile e-mail application. The days of text-only e-mails is nearing an end.

Yahoo! Go
Now don't think I'm an e-mail crazed reviewer here. I know I'm not the only one who uses multiple mailboxes and e-mail providers. Take my advice, both applications are beneficial in their own ways. In addition to checking your Yahoo! mail, this application is loaded with 'widgets' (quick links or tools that work for single-purpose services) to many news categories (such as Movies, Sports, Finance). The e-mail client in this application is also pretty powerful, though it may take a little more getting used to (compared to the Gmail application) Simply open the application and start viewing your mail and favorite topics without time-consuming searches that a mobile Web experience sometime brings.

Google Maps
The folks at Google must be on to something when it comes to developing programs that enhance the mobile experience. Google Maps is another superb application that will not only keep you from getting lost, but also transform you into a modern day Chris Columbus. On more than one occasion, Google Maps has saved me from becoming utterly lost, miles away from home. The application can utilize GPS technology (if supported by your device) to identify your current location. Once identified, it provides a map of the surrounding area with driving directions to your specified destination. The GPS feature is a must have for anyone who travels and fears asking one of the shifty locals for directions.

Facebook
Say hello to social networking on the go! For those obsessed with checking a friend's 'Wall' or secretly looking at all their new pictures, time to rejoice because Facebook has gone mobile. The application provides a window into all of the updates that you obsessively check on your desktop computer. This is a must have for anyone with restrictive IT policies that prevent access to social sites on your business's workstation. A quick glimpse at your device is all you need to stay updated and ensure that you don't miss the weekend parties. From message indicators and alert notifications, the Facebook application will satisfy your mobile social network needs.
