Best Akron, Ohio Restaurants for Healthy Eating

For Those of Us Looking for a Bit More from Our Plates

Tara Dawn
Though we all understand that cooking at home is probably the best way to eat healthy-no matter where we live-going to new restaurants opens up opportunities for social affairs, and trying delicious new food we wouldn't have an idea of how to cook. I personally am a great lover of restaurant-going, but there are times when it's hard to find one that allows me to enjoy everything I love about going out, as well as maintaining an acceptable calorie intake. Here are a few restaurants in the greater Akron area that I think are great for those that want to watch what they eat and find healthier fare.

Aladdin's

I revere this Highland Square restaurant in just about every list I publish here at AC... mostly because I absolutely love the food. Mediterranean food is generally balanced, and includes many ingredients that are naturally light and nutrient-rich. Aladdin's offers all that, along with fantastic atmosphere, and a huge variety of dishes. Obviously not everything on the menu is incredibly healthy, but there are so many great meals with healthy fats and veggies.

Miss Julie's Kitchen

This little restaurant in Firestone Park is quickly becoming one of my favorite spots. Run by an incredibly warm and lovable Miss Julie, the food here encompasses a variety of vegetables and incorporates a whole lot of compassion for great nutrition. All veggie, Miss Julie's Kitchen uses local resources to provide customers the freshest ingredients in the most delicious and creative ways. It's a tiny little place, and it doesn't seem like much from the outside, but take a step in-you wont regret it.

Mustard Seed Café

Housed above the ever-famous Mustard Seed Market in Montrose (tongue twister, anyone?), the Mustard Seed Café uses many of the healthy ingredients sold in its store to offer customers a rather fantastic sample of what healthy can taste like. There is a rather comprehensive menu-something for everyone. Though a bit on the pricey side, I think it is certainly worth a visit, particularly for hungry vegetarians.

Corky's Café

Though not technically in Akron, this Jackson Township restaurant certainly is worth mentioning. It's a cute little place, and the food is just so good! I've sampled both vegetarian and not so vegetarian dishes, but everything I've had there has been absolutely amazing. I would recommend the Greek Bruchetta for sure-and top everything off with a hot Chai tea.

Sakura

Everyone who knows me understands my love for Japanese food, and the great taste that is delivered through its simplicity. I previously wrote a post on the 10 best sushi restaurants in Akron, and Sakura (conveniently located in Montrose) is right there at the top. Just as any other restaurant, not everything on the menu is healthy-but any non-fried or tempura-flaked sushi will be fantastic, as well as the miso glazed fish. Healthy Japanese dishes are easy to come by, and this restaurant serves up some of the best.

For all of you out there trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle, keep up the good work. Akron's got so much to offer you!

Very well written article! If I lived in Ohio, I would love to try out Sakura - Japanese food is the best.
