Aromatherapy is a broad term that refers to any of the various traditions that make use of essential oils. The word "aromatherapy" in and of itself was first used in the 1920s by the French, particularly a chemist by the name of René Maurice Gattefossé. A small mishap in his perfume lab led to the discovery of lavender oil being used to relieve pain.
Since then we have stumbled upon millions of uses for essential oils. Just so we are clear an "essential oil" is a concentrated liquid that does not mix well with water and retains unstable aroma compounds from plants. The "oil" becomes essential in the sense that it carries a distinctive scent, or epitome, of the plant.
Now let's talk about aromatherapy and some of its uses. We know that Frankincense and Myrrh has been used since Jesus was born. My reference to that means using unconventional methods to healing is not something that was recently invented.
There are four major categories that aromatherapy is used in. The first category is aerial diffusion; where we enjoy the fragrance that is emitted into the air, as well as, the aerial disinfection values. Next category, direct inhalation, where it can be used as treatment for respiratory infections, and cold/flu symptoms. The third category is considered topical; this is the most common use the general public is familiar with being that it's used for massages, baths, compresses, etc. Finally, the fourth category a little more sensitive, oral, rectal, and vaginal interfaces. Examples of these would be parasites and anointments.
Ok, now that you're more familiar with the topic, let's get to specifics. Everyone knows when you're cooking you wouldn't use pepper if you wanted a salt taste. Well, the same goes for aromatherapy and essential oils. It is very important to know this because, each oil is designed to do a specific job so to speak. Just like medications, when they are misused can be very harmful and even fatal.
Candles come in all shapes and fragrances and much like the rest of the world, you get what you pay for. That doesn't mean for you to go out and spend a hundred dollars on a candle, but know this "quality" oils are quite costly.
Candles that contain Lavender, Basil, and Lemon Oils (just to name a few) is what you want to look for in aiding the reduction levels of your stress.
One of the best reasons I can think of to use essential oils and using them in aromatherapy is they have multiple remedies. You're overloaded with stress, this causes a migraine which in turn causes irritability. This scenario calls for Lavender Oil, which is used for its calming and relaxation effects soothing your migraine, thus decreasing your stress.
Maybe your stressful situation doesn't cause a migraine, but causes depression. No worries, this is the time to use Basil Oil. Your spirits will be lifted in no time and your stress will melt away.
The last one I mentioned "Lemon Oil", that's a good one. Lemon Oil is well known for its anti-stress factors. Not to mention the wonderful fragrance that helps you to open your senses while clearing your mind.
Now down to the makers and distributors of such candles. One well known company for candles is Glade, however, I would not recommend them for aromatherapy purposes. The reason is based on the quality of their oils.
Istrongly recommend Spring Country Candles for all of your aromatherapy candle needs. The quality of their candles are remarkable. Spring Country Candles is where I buy my candles, so I can truly say you will get what you pay for. They offer very informative explanations of all there essential oils used in their candles. Additional information (including how to order) can be found on their website: http://www.springcountrycandles.com/Aromatherapy.htm
The next company comes highly recommended from my mom, she loves aromatherapy candles. If you haven't guessed by now it's Yankee Candle. They have world wide (U.S.) stores plus a website to make their products more accessible plus they will send you a scented catalog upon request. They have great sales and flat rate shipping. Their contact number is 1-877-803-6890 and website is http://www.yankeecandle.com/cgi-bin/ycbvp/stores.jsp.
My third suggestion for aromatherapy candles for stress relief (or any other therapy you're in need of) is Mia Bella Candles. They are known for their "natural gourmet candles", when you request a brochure they send you a sample tart. That's really what I like most about them, they are one of the few that let you sample the merchandise before buying. For more information you can visit there website: http://www.naturalmiabella.com/aromatherapy.htm.
The next aromatherapy candle review is of Unity Candle Shop in Rochester, New York. If you ever get to New York, you have got to make a quick stop, you regret it. They make most of their candles in their home. I couldn't believe the quality and fragrances available. The shop is located at 574 Howard Road and can be reached at 585-328-3774. They also accept special orders.
Finally, the last aromatherapy candle distributor I have heard nothing but good reviews for is Serenity Supply. They have a really nice web store, easy to navigate and understand, not to mention the quality of their products being superb. You can visit them at http://www.serenitysupply.com/catalog/Candles-17-1.html or contact them by phone 1-800-577-1503.
