In Po'ipu on Lawaii Road you will find Spouting Horn Beach Park. This park features an amazing natural wonder that is one of the best attractions on the south shore of Kauai. As the ocean hits the reef, water sprays high into the air through a small lava shelf. As each wave hits, the water continues to spray skyward. It is best to see the Spouting Horn during high tide, and the setting sun makes for great pictures. This sight also has another hole that spouts only air, creating a loud moaning sound that adds to the effect of the blowhole. It is safest to view the blowhole from the guarded overlook. Many people have ventured down onto the reef only to be swept away by a rogue wave. Never underestimate the power of the ocean.
Very close to Spouting Horn, you will find the National Tropical Botanical Garden; this is by far the best botanical garden on all of Kauai. This beautiful park actually consists of two gardens, the Allerton and McBryde Gardens. These gardens are lush and green and filled with the most incredible tropical plants. In order to see the garden you have to take a guided tour that lasts about two and a half hours. The tour is fantastic and features the ficus tree that was seen in the movie Jurassic Park, the scene where they found the dinosaur eggs. The tours costs $45, and reservations are required. There is no fee to go to the visitor's center.
One of the best beaches on Kauai lies on the south shore, the Mahaulepa. Located east of the resort area, this beach features rugged cliffs, sandy beach, and azure waters. This beach is great for strolling and features many hiking trails. You will see a lot of kite surfers and windsurfers in the water. Mahaulepa is very sacred to the Hawaiians, and is a research site and a habitat for endangered plants and animals. Please respect nature when visiting Mahaulepa.
If you are a golfer, than you have to check out Kukuiolono Park and Golf Course. This used to be the Private Park and golf course to sugar magnate, Walter McBryde. He donated his park to the people of Kauai in 1919. Although not very challenging, it is a great course for beginners, and at only $8 per day, is a steal for anyone wanting to golf on Kauai.
The south shore of Kauai has beautiful weather, beautiful beaches and great places to stay. This guide shares some of the best attractions on the south shore of Kauai to help round out your trip. Enjoy!
