Rechargeables- Ni-MH
Go green and look into buying rechargeable batteries. If part of the reason you invested in battery-operated lamps was the environment, there really is no other choice but this one. You not only keep waste down for Mother Earth, but put more money in your pocketbook in the long run. The upfront cost, of course is more, the batteries are more expensive, plus you have to buy a charger (which can run anywhere from about ten dollars up to about twenty) but the savings add up over time. Try it for yourself and see.
According to the website MetaEfficent, in their article, The Best Rechargeable Batteries and Chargers Of 2010, "the new hybrid Nickel-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) cells. These hybrid batteries have a lot going for them: they come fully charged (like alkaline batteries), and they can hold their charge over may months (unlike regular Ni-MH rechargeables."
Lithium- The Energizer Ultimate
Tested using a digital camera, Consumer Reports in Best Bets in AA Batteries says that "Lithium batteries did best...The Energizer Ultimate took 678 pictures." Now this is test on short bursts of power but seeing that it outperformed the rest, it is a safe bet for those that do not want to change over the greener alternative yet of taking time to recharge and reuse your batteries.
Alkaline- The Cheapest
The best advice is to stay away from Alkaline all together for things that draw a lot of power. Though they are the cheapest batteries and tend to have the longest shelf life, you get what you pay for. If you do choose to go this cheaper route, look for store brands and lesser known brands to save even more money. Very few "longer lasting" alkaline claims are true for every product, especially for use in items that are on for longer periods of time, like battery-operated lamps.
