A Guide to Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, and Jacksonville Beach

K. Bellamy
Known collectively as the "Jax Beaches," beaches in Jacksonville, FL nestle on an unnamed barrier island along 20 miles of coastline between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean.

Along with Jacksonville Beach, you'll find the coastal communities of Atlantic Beach and Neptune Beach - each with its own charm and attractions and just 15 miles from the city of Jacksonville. Perfect for a quick afternoon trip to wiggle your toes in the sand and relax for awhile.

Jacksonville Beach
While the population of Jacksonville Beach is the largest (21,000) of the three beach communities, you'll find this unpretentious beach community "across the ditch" from Jacksonville - as the locals say - to be the least crowded with beach goers most of the year. With the widest beaches and home of the nearly quarter-mile long Jacksonville Beach Fishing Pier, Jacksonville Beach is a favorite of surfers and sun goddesses.

Lots of restaurants and surf shops can be found nearby and Seawalk Pavilion is host to numerous concerts, festivals, and movies under the stars throughout the year.

Atlantic Beach
While Atlantic Beach runs only about a mile in length, this strip of ocean coastline is usually the most popular of the Jacksonville beaches. Second in population (13,000) to Jacksonville Beach, Atlantic Beach is first in parking nightmares for those wanting to enjoy its white sands but there is free parking to be had when you can find it. Pay lots are available for those less fortunate.

Newly opened is the Atlantic Beach Dog Park. While there is a charge for all beach-going doggies using the dog park, guests and visitors can come along, too. For more cultural pooches - or humans - be sure to check out the monthly North Beaches Art Walk.

Neptune Beach
The smallest in native population (7,500), Neptune Beach is located between Jacksonville Beach and Atlantic Beach. You'll find very little public beach parking here and speed bumps to remind you that many residents live here all year long.

With only a half mile of beach, you might find that the best part of Neptune Beach is the dining and bar scene. Give a visit to Sun Dog Diner, Papa Joe's, or Pete's Bar when you're done catching the sun's rays.

Dogs are allowed on Atlantic Beach, Jacksonville Beach, and Neptune Beach year round before 9am and after 5pm. Leashed dogs only, please.
