If you polled a few hundred visitors or residents of the Big Island, chances are the majority would select Makalawena Beach as their favorite on the island. With plenty of fine white sand and very few crowds, this is one beach you will want to bring your camera to. Excellent swimming and boogie boarding, with plenty of secluded coves, Makalawena Beach is never crowded because it is a bit of a hike to get to. Plan on a twenty minute walk each way along a trail, or bring your 4 WD Jeep.
Another quiet gem and one of the best beaches near Kona is Makole'a Beach, a beautiful black sand beach you may very well have all to yourself. Bring your snorkel gear and enjoy resting on the only real black sand created by lava flow near Kona. Your only company on this black sand beach may be local fisherman on the weekends.
For a relaxing time in a calm tide pool, make your way over to Wawaloli Beach. Kids will love this beach, and parents will feel safer and more secure because of the protected waters. This is particularly a great spot to hang out at when the surf is rough elsewhere on the Big Island.
If you are in the mood to go snorkeling, check out Pawai Bay. Located half of a mile from Old Kona Airport Park, Pawai Bay offers crystal clear water and plenty of area to explore. Snorkel the caves and caverns and you will observe rare tropical fish and stunning coral.
Another fabulous spot to snorkel is at Kahalu'u Beach Park. Tons of tropical fish and even the occasional eel and octopus inhabit the beautiful waters here. If you forgot your snorkel gear, don't worry. You can rent some nearby. You probably won't have this area all to yourself. Even if there are no people around, you are likely to find a family of friendly sea turtles.
If you have time, you will also want to check out Kua Bay, also known as Manini'owali. It is often uncrowded during the week, and it offers some excellent swimming opportunities. Always be aware of the conditions when visiting the best beaches near Kona, as the ocean surrounding these islands can often be fierce. Enjoy your stay on the Big Island of Hawaii, and aloha.
