Best Bedtime Stories for Kids

Bedtime Stories Make Memories that Last a Lifetime

Michelle M. Guilbeau
Many parents have their favorite bedtime stories from when they were a kid and enjoy passing that pleasure on to their own children. A nighttime ritual of reading a book to a child can make memories that last a lifetime for both kids and parents.

There are so many wonderful bedtime stories for kids that it makes it difficult to decide which ones are the best bedtime stories. However, I have some bedtime stories that I am very familiar with and are personal favorites for me, so I consider them to be the best bedtime stories.

Some of my favorite choices are not my kids' favorite picks, but some are and that is okay because my children will someday choose their favorite bedtime stories to read to their own children and carry with them those wonderful bedtime story memories.

Here you will find my 3 favorite kids bedtime stories, every time I read these stories, they still bring back childhood memories that are pure joy.

Bedtime Story #1: Little Red Riding Hood

This story was probably my top favorite bedtime story, I still can remember vividly to this day thinking about Red Riding Hood as a child and wondering how in the heck she could not realize that the wolf is not her Grandma. After multiple readings of the story which ironically was normally read to me by my Grandma, I would talk to Red Riding Hood and tell her to not stop and talk to that bad wolf when she was on her way to her Grandma's house, she never listened to me. I had that story memorized from the front cover to the back cover so I knew exactly what was coming for Red Riding Hood. Fortunately this story always ended on a good note when Red Riding Hood and her Grandma were saved by a hunter who was passing by. It was an emotional roller coaster for me every time Red Riding Hood was read to me but I loved every moment.

Bedtime Story #2: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

I loved Snow White not only because she was beautiful but also because she was so sweet and kind. My heart would break every time this bedtime story was read to me and the part came where Snow White bit into the apple, I could hardly keep my ears open to hear that Snow White fell into the deathlike sleep. However, my spirits were always lifted with seeing the cute little Seven Dwarfs surrounding Snow White in her time of need and finally the prince coming along to save the day. I always loved to hear about the happily ever after scenario.

Bedtime Story #3: Three Little Pigs

The Three Little Pigs were always so cute to me although sometimes I remember thinking as a little kid that they really should have known better than to build a house just simply out of straw and then out of sticks. I think I was too serious at times as a child, too much thought at such a young age and it makes me laugh now. I was always thrilled to see the pigs win out in the end against the wolf, kids always seem to enjoy seeing the good triumph over the bad.

Kids bedtime stories are just the best because not only does it give a child a chance to hear written words read to them which aids in successful reading, but it is also a wonderful opportunity for the child and caregiver to bond!

Can't go wrong with the Grimm's Fairy Tales, I love Aesop's fables as well because of their moral teachings.

Just had a flashback; completely forgot about "365 Bedtime Stories" from childhood. I do not remember what books I read to my kids at bedtime; I let them pick out what they wanted me to read.

Can't go wrong with death and dismemberment for a children's story. My favorite is the Snow White story. Boils down to a stepmother that wants to kill her step daughter.
The Three Pigs boil the wolf.
And the huntsman kills the wolf in the Red Riding Hood.
    Society can be pretty sick.

Funny - all three of them have some kind of death in them. Also, all three have Americanized versions that are less graphic.

    You go for the classics!
