The honorable mention to this list is Weekend Song from Streetlife Serenade. The album is one of Joel's earlier works. This single gets the nod here for its "hard-workn' lyrics" and "back-breakin' tone."
10. Joel's debut album, Cold Spring Harbor, features one of his best songs in the fast-paced tune, Everybody Loves You Now. It was later released off the 1981 album, Songs in the Attic.
9. The sophomore album Piano Man produced a hometown kind of song, You're My Home. This single opens with a unique guitar sound and includes Joel's familiar piano. Anytime a song says "home can be the Pennsylvania Turnpike" gets an automatic entry to this list of the best Billy Joel obscure songs. This single was also released in Songs in the Attic.
8. You know the album cover for 52nd Street when you see it. Joel is classically dressed in a suit with sneakers. Released in 1978, it's Rosalinda's Eyes that makes you look twice. This song has a great sound, lyrics, and romantic feel. Its Spanish flare will have you singing along.
7. Zanzibar is among the best Billy Joel songs you may not hear on the radio. It's also released off 52nd Street. Joel's "got the old man's car" and his voice is as strong as ever. It's a great tune to this great album.
6. That's Not Her Style is an underrated single, probably because it's overshadowed by the other hits off the 1989 album, Storm Front. The lyrics are very clever making it a great complement to one of Joel's later works.
5. The Night is Still Young for some reason is also in the underrated category. If you listen to the lyrics closely, it's truly a brilliant song. It was released off the Greatest Hits, Volume I & II, and it could literally be characterized as a hit among hits.
4. "Oh baby, I think you were lost in the seventies..." is part of a groovy kind of lyrics with a hint of calypso that says it all in the single, All You Wanna Do is Dance. It's released off the album, Turnstiles.
3. All for Leyna has a catchy opening. I'm not sure who Leyna was, maybe it was a brief fling or maybe just a figment of someone's imagination. It doesn't matter because it's a great single off Glass Houses, which is arguably Joel's best album. Give it up for Leyna.
2. Sleeping with the Television On comes to mind when I think back to my bachelor days. Connecting a song to something in your past makes a good song great, and it's another single off Glass Houses.
1. I Don't Want to Be Alone is the best of the best Billy Joel songs you may not hear on the radio. Why it wasn't a hit single, I'm not at all sure. I guess the song gods couldn't make every single off Glass Houses a hit, so this one may have taken a back seat. That's ok because it makes it that more special. It's got a warm feeling about it; that's why it's # 1 on this list.
There you have it, the best Billy Joel obscure songs. If you have any that could be added to this list, feel free to comment.

Post a CommentHow can you not love every single thing off of Cold Spring Harbor? I even love how young and untrained his voice is there.... And come on, 'Falling of the Rain'? He could have set that piano against the most banal lyrics of all time and it still would have made CSH one of the best debut albums of all time.
