Best Board Games for Children

Games that Teach Skills Through Playing

Rachel de Carlos
Getting as many senses involved while doing something is the best way to increase brain power. Here are my top 5 picks for board games that reinforce basic skills through playing. It's nice to see classic adult board games restyled to interest children of the internet age. Socialization through the use of board games is an important stage in a child's development.

These games are readily available for purchase online or in toy stores.

Monopoly - Ages 8 and up, or Monopoly Jr. - Ages 5 and up

Both versions have a variety of themes that will have children enthusiastic before the box is even opened. Familiar themes, such as Disney or Pokemon characters, are easier for children to adapt to than the classic Monopoly their parents grew up with. Practice basic math skills and learn financial concepts from becoming wealthy to going bankrupt.

Clue - Ages 8 and up, or Clue Jr - Ages 5 to 8

Another classic board game with variations such as Scooby-Doo or Harry Potter, will spark immediate familiarity with younger players. This mystery game helps children develop basic logic and deduction skills. Narrow down the possibilities using the clues until you can name a suspect, the weapon, and where the crime took place.

Life - Ages 9 and up

This game illustrates the importance of the decisions we make in our lives. By spinning a wheel, children see what will happen if they make the decision to do things like go to college, get a good job, get married, or what will happen if they don't. The goal of the game is to avoid bad luck and to retire with the biggest fortune. This is an ideal way to teach children about cause and effect.

Blokus - Ages 5 and up

The rules are simple, the playing pieces have bright colors, and it can be as complicated or as simple as the players make it. Develop strategy skills by placing various colored shapes on the board until all your pieces are gone or until no one can find room to use another piece. It has won more than 20 awards, including Mensa Select.

Chinese Checkers - Ages 5 and up

Although the goal of moving your marbles to the point opposite you on the board seems very basic, Chinese Checkers can be as complicated as chess. This is a game that will hold the interest of children as they develop new and more complex strategies for winning.

  • Children's board games that teach skills
Board games can bring families and friends closer as well as providing learning opportunities. Children learn to think logically and to be gracious winners and losers.

Thanks for this! I haven't played a board game in ages. It seems that more and more families have drifted away from this type of entertainment in favour of electronic games and other games.
