Best Bob Hoskins Movies

Anne Wright
The best Bob Hoskins movies are just part of his extraordinary career. This high school dropout is a masterpiece of his own in BBC productions of Dickens and Shakespeare, and seems just as authentic in Hollywood releases or his own native British productions. These are 6 of the best Bob Hoskins films.

Best Bob Hoskins Movies: The Long Good Friday (1980)

This Hoskins film helped propel him to a wider fame. He's like a Cockney Tony Soprano playing an angry and violent mob boss who tries to have a normal private life with his girlfriend (Helen Mirren) and aging mother except someone is trying to blow him up. Pierce Brosnan also makes a brief but powerful early appearance.

Best Bob Hoskins Movies: Mona Lisa (1986)

Hoskins earned an Oscar nomination and a Cannes Film Festival Award for his role as an ex-convict who can't find a job except as a driver for a prostitute (Cathy Tyson) who he comes to sincerely care about. Her shenanigans wind up pitting him against a gangster (Michael Caine) with whom he makes an equally fascinating but much less friendly couple.

Best Bob Hoskins Movies: The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne (1987)

Maggie Smith dominates in this BAFTA Film Award winner as an older woman struggling to survive by giving piano lessons. Hoskins is devastating as the unscrupulous object of her affections.

Best Bob Hoskins Movies: Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988)

Hoskins' gravelly voice is perfect for private eye Eddie Valiant whose client Roger Rabbit really is innocent of the murder charges he's facing. This animated film about Toontown won 3 Oscars.

Best Bob Hoskins Movies: Mermaids (1990)

Hoskins is wonderful as a warm and gentle shoe salesman who adds a little normalcy to Cher's unconventional family obsessed with sex, religion, and underwater breathing records. It's directed by Richard Benjamin who went on to Pushing Daisies and it's one of Christina Ricci's earliest roles.

Best Bob Hoskins Movies: Felicia's Journey (1999)

Even dumb thrillers can be fun so this smart Hoskins film is absolutely harrowing. Directed by Atom Egoyan and based on the William Trevor novel, the terror unfolds slowly as a nondescript catering manager watches re-runs about a TV chef and preys on runaway young girls. His latest victim (Elaine Cassidy) is especially sympathetic as an Irish girl pregnant and abandoned by the boyfriend she's trying to track down. It's suspenseful right up to the dramatic surprise ending.
