Modern Pastry Shop
This great Italian bakery in the North End neighborhood derives a lot of fame from its cannolis, but excels at cakes. Their strawberry shortcake, chocolate cake, and cheesecakes are all heavenly. Modern Pastry is a good stop for wedding planning, as it has won awards for its wedding cakes and offers a number of gift items which could work well as wedding favors. The ricotta pie, torrone, pizelles, and berry tarts are also worth trying. As if that wasn't enough to entice you, Modern's prices are also some of the most reasonable in the area.
Eldo Cake House
This Chinatown bakery whips up some mean mixed fruit cakes-spongy and airy, with whipped cream topping instead of heavy frosting. Eldo's is a popular birthday cake destination, and they offer death-by-sugar cakes too, if hazelnut buttercream sounds more like your style. Although prices have crept up a little in recent months, Eldo's is still an affordable place. If you swing by, might be worth trying their pineapple pastries, almond cookies or egg tarts.
Sweet Tooth
If you're looking for a cake that's truly special, and willing to pay a little more for a fancier pie, Sweet Tooth is your place. Tired of the vanilla cake with chocolate buttercream routine? Why not try the gingerbread blueberry cake? Or consider ordering a couple dozen cupcakes instead; they are like mini Sweet Tooth cakes, individually packaged. Filled with berry cream or chocolate mousse, and topped with anything from chocolate-covered strawberries to homemade truffles, these cupcakes are nothing to trifle with. While you're at this Dorchester bakery, you might also find it hard to resist the oatmeal cookies (made with cranberries) and mini apple crumb pies.
