Best of Breakfast Restaurants in Akron, Ohio

Tara Dawn
I recently experienced a loss in the family-the Akron, restaurant family, that is. My favorite spot for breakfast in the area recently closed: Off the Wall Eatery. As I walked to their door for the last time, disappointed that the lights were off and no sign gave explanation, I realized that I didn't really have a second choice. Sure, Akron has a variety of Bob Evan's restaurants that make half-way decent food at a less than decent price-but I missed my small, cozy atmosphere with the real "Mom and Pop" feel to it. It got me thinking about the various Akron restaurants that cater to the breakfast crowd, and I decided to do some investigative work. Here are the three that I've found to be pretty good (though they'll never live up to the Wall's biscuits, sadly).

Pillitiere's Restaurant

Located on Waterloo road in Firestone Park, Pillitiere's is my top-choice breakfast in Akron. A veritable small-town style place, with quarter machines at the door and a great staff, it's a place not to miss. The prices are phenomenal, all under $6 for a breakfast entrée. Everything I've tried has been absolutely fantastic, but for a gal who has such an incredible love affair with sausage gravy, the Country Sausage Skillet is the way to go. Even better, the regular menu is great as well (try the turkey Ruben). It's also now open seven days a week.

Eddy's Deli

There are two locations owned by Eddy's Deli, one in Cuyahoga Falls and the other in Stow. Both are fabulous and both will supply you with a delicious home-cooked breakfast. The Stow location is also now open 24 hours on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays for those that need a late night omelet (or a post-bar food run). Like Pillitiere's, most breakfast entrees are under $6, and the service is fantastic. I personally love a restaurant that includes grits on their menu, and this one certainly does. I suggest the chili and eggs or the "Good Ole Smoke." The lunch food is also amazing.

Wally Waffle

Though I can't really dub Wally Waffle as a "Mom and Pop" restaurant, it's been an Akron favorite since I can remember, and for good reason. Growing up, I longed for their chocolate chip waffles. These days, I'm more partial to the fresh strawberries and whipped cream-but regardless, there's no denying that they make a fantastic breakfast. Further, any restaurant willing to put "Chicken 'n Waffle" on the menu gets a thumbs-up from me. Those looking for a healthier option, too, can choose an oat bran waffle. Don't like waffles? I'm not sure what's wrong with you, but nonetheless there are other fantastic breakfast favorites to choose from.

I still mourn the closing of my beloved Off the Wall, but it is comforting to know that Akron still offers the opportunity to have a delicious, well-priced breakfast.
