10 Songs for a Breakup

Tammy Lee Morris
It happens - relationships hit the skids and fall apart. It sucks but rest assured, there is a song or 10 that will help you get through it. Whether you are looking or a song that will make you feel better, make you laugh, or simply give you the strength to get through the day, here is my list of the best breakup songs.

Let's start with one that will make you laugh. "Pray for You" by Jaron and the Long Road to Love seems like it will be a sweet song - based solely upon the title. You would be wrong to think that though. With lyrics like "I pray a flower pot falls from a windowsill and knocks you in the head like I'd like to. . ." you just can't go wrong with this one on a breakup song list.

"Time for Me to Fly" is a classic from REO Speedwagon but it is definitely timeless. This great song has the perfect lyrics for someone who is simply fed up with a bad of relationship. "I make you laugh, and you make me cry, I believe it's time for me to fly. . ." is the best line.

"Fly Away" from Lenny Kravitz could be about a number of things - wanting to escape from any situation, but for a breakup list, it's perfect. It rocks and Lenny is certainly easy on the eyes.

"Sometimes Love Just Aint Enough" from Patty Smyth and Don Henley is a beautiful song that draws on the deep pain and emotion of love that just isn't enough to keep two people together. "There's a danger in loving somebody too much, and it's sad when you know it's your heart you can't trust, there's a reason why people don't stay where they are, baby sometimes love just aint enough," is one of the most painful lyrics.

I remember when my first "real" boyfriend dumped me for someone else. I was 17 and interestingly enough, "Look Away" from Chicago was the first song I heard on the radio. It was quite fitting as it talks about someone running into a lost love and having the painful emotions stirred up once again - especially when they see their ex with someone else.

No breakup song list would be complete without Gloria Gaynor's classic "I Will Survive." This has become an anthem for anyone who has kicked someone to the curb and it's got a beat you can dance to.

It's not exactly a breakup song but "Friends in Low Places" by Garth Brooks is a great song about dealing with an ex and maybe even having the last say with them.

"Already Gone" from the Eagles has a country twang but it's a great song about somebody hearing rumors that their love is about to dump them. "Cause I'm already gone, and I'm feelin' strong, I will sing this victory song. . ." are great lyrics that says it perfectly: I'm outta here baby! "So often times it happens, that we live our lives in chains and we never even know we have the key. . ." is my favorite line of all.

"Take it on the Run" from REO Speedwagon is the story of a man finding out his love has been cheating on him. He decides that he's had enough and he's got plenty to say about the situation. "You're thinking up your white lies, you're putting on your bedroom eyes, you say you're coming home but you don't know when. . . you take it on the run baby, if that's the way you want it baby, and I don't want you around. . ."

To round out the breakup song list, how about some "Freebird" from Lynyrd Skynyrd? If this song isn't a great breakup song then I don't know what is. Yes, it is most often associated with death and passing on because of the tragic deaths of Lynyrd Skynyrd band members in a plane crash, but it is truly about the breakup of a relationship and isn't this song what it's all about - becoming free as a bird when you experience a breakup? Pass the cigarette lighter please. . .

Two other songs that would be great on a breakup song list would be "Snuff" by Slipknot and "Your Decision" by Alice in Chains.

I imagine "She Let Herself Go" by George Straight would be a good funny one for women who have just been dumped.

I don't do well with sad songs during a break-up. Makes me think about things I shouldn't think about. :(
