Best Buy Return Policy

Cathy Pelekakis
I was in Arundel Mills Malls, Hanover MD the other day. This is a large mall that has mostly outlet stores and a great movie theater. Anyway, my son and I were in Best Buy, he was purchasing some DVD movie and as we were standing in line to pay I heard a disturbing discussion in front of me. You cannot help but overhear loud conversations and this man was furious. It appeared that the man had purchased a Tom Tom XL.S from Best Buy, from what I heard this is a synopsis of what was said:

Man: (returning a sealed package with receipt) I want to return this Tom Tom XL.S, here is the receipt.

Clerk: (looking at receipt) You purchased this four days ago what was the problem?

Man: I read the back of the box and it appears that the Tom Tom will not find store names. I paid cash here is the receipt.

Clerk: There will be a 15% restocking charge that will be deducted from this receipt.

Man: (Becoming and little loud with disbelief) What do you mean there will be a 15% restocking charge, all you are going to do is walk it over and put it back on the shelf, I have not even opened the package.

Clerk: Sorry, that is the store policy.

Man: (must have been doing the math in his head and becoming just a bit more loud) You mean to tell me that you are going to charge me $45.00 to walk across the aisle and put the (blank) back on the shelf ? You have a 14 day return policy and I am returning this in 4 days???

Clerk: (she becoming just a bit loud herself) That is the store policy.

Man: I want to talk to the manager, no one has ever informed me of this when I have purchased other items here.

The Manager was called over, Rob and I were around four deep in the line so we heard just a bit more of the conversation, before we left the store.

Manager: (looking at receipt and accessing the situation) Well, there is nothing I can do for you, the policy is quite clear, there is a 15% restocking charge and I have to abide by the policy,

Man: (becoming a bit red around the gills) That is unacceptable give me your Corporate number.

At this point, a lot of customers were looking around and it appeared that the situation was getting out of hand. I told my son we had to leave. When I got home I was curious about the policy that they were talking about and I went on line and I found out it was true. I have enclosed the link to their policy for your convenience. I also found out that if you paid cash over a certain dollar figure that they will not refund you in cash and that you have to wait for a corporate check to be mailed to you. However if you paid by credit card they will refund the balance to your credit card. I just thought that I would pass this information along to consumers who purchase from Best Buy. A word of caution, look at the return policies before purchasing.

What you don't see behind the scenes might give you an idea why some BB stores have this return policy. It cost's them to process the return, input the returns into their stock inventory as USED, and then adjust their chain store invoices for the RETURNED item. After the item has been checked as being "usable" it is sent to their main warehouse to confirm whether it's a non-stockable merchandise or not. It depends on the degree of damage to the returned item and/or its packaging.
If it is resellable, then it may show up back on their shelves. If it is too far "damaged" or missing parts then it gets written of as spoiled merchandise. The
The BB stores have auctions or inside contract buyers that will buy up any returns to sell on the Internet (eBay), via wholeseller stores, Second Hand Tech shops, "joe's" TV and electronics store, etc. They have your 15% to pay for all this work to get some money back from the re-sellers. Great info for everyone- Best Buy tried to take advantage of me a few years ago when buying a computer, and I haven't been back since! Thankfully I was wise to the scam and didn't fall for it, but it ticked me off!

thanks for bringing this to my attention. I'm sorry for not commenting sooner. The email thing is not working and so I have to go through my articles one by one and see who all has commented. Because of this I will probably just leave smiley faces on everyone's articles so that at least they will get the page views since I am so far behind.
