Careers for artists: Illustrator
Illustrators tell the stories in pictures. Illustrators can do many different things, some do picture books, textbooks, magazines, and many other things. Since there are many options for illustrators, you'll have to choose what you love to draw the most. Many illustrators are free lancers, and many have a regular position. There is a lot of freedom with an illustrating job. All you have to do is find what suits you best, a great career for an artist.
Careers for artists: Animator
Animation is a huge industry. Animators create cartoons you see in movies, television shows, and commercials. Animators also create special effects for movies, and the graphics for computer games. The big thing to consider with this career as an artist is how much you want the computer to be a part of your art, if your answer is not at all, this probably isn't a good career choice for you.
Careers for artists: Graphic designer
If you want an in demand career, graphic design is a great choice for that and for your art. Graphic design also involves a lot of work with the computer, so consider that before getting into this field. Graphic designers do just about everything kind of advertisement you see, so if you're interested in the marketing and advertising world as well as art, this is a great choice.
Careers for artists: Set designer
Set designers are the people responsible for setting the mood in plays, movies, and television shows. These are the people who design the backgrounds and settings for entertainment. This is a great career for artists who are also interested in movies and plays because the set designers have to become familiar with the storyline to make the backgrounds fit in. An added bonus is that you get to see the movies, plays, and television shows you work on before everyone else.
Other careers for artists
People who are talented in art have lots of different options when it comes to choosing a career. Artists can use their talents to become interior designers, composers, curators, art dealers, directors, web designers, art teachers, and many other things. It all just depends on what kind of art you're best at and what other interests you have.

A close friend of mine falls under the illustrator and graphic design categories. I think the universal message of this article is that there are many options, and it's key for anyone to look for the many ways that their talents can be useful.
