Best Celebrations for the Fourth of July in Miami, Florida

With July 4th almost upon us, I thought I'd share a few of the food related events going on in my fair city. Some are free, others costly, but all are fun and worthwhile.

One: Food Drive and Barbecue: Come to this shindig and bring a donation of any foods that are shelf staple, Tuna, beans dried milk, etc... these will be donated to the Million Meals committee...Take part in a pie eating contest and a huge barbecue with samples of beer at your disposal.

Noon -4 pm....Whole Foods Market, 810 University Dr....no charge

Two: Peacock Park in Coconut Grove; Take your place in this Hot Dog eating contest when you compete with 10 contestants to eat 20 hot dogs in record time...A trophy will be a awarded and a cash prize of $500 to the big winner...there will be music played live, activities for kids and free hot dogs...4-6 pm...when the sun sets a fireworks display will take place

4-10 pm...no charge... 2820 McFarlane Rd., Coconut Grove, Miami...

Three: The historic Barnicle in Coconut Grove : Learn the fine art of kite making, other arts and crafts plus more games and a scavenger hunt...Famed Musician Lenny Batista will take the stage to perform..

11 am-3:30 pm....The Barnacle Historic State Park, 3485 Main Hwy, Coconut Grove: $5.00 for adults, $2:00 for children 2-12..free for kids under 5...

Four: Viscaya Museum : Red, White and Blue Festival: DJ.s, live music, and a fine spread of delicous and exotic food and drink awaits at this most famous and luxurious spot in Miami...when the sun sets, fireworks will light up the sky

Tickets $55; members, $40.00, free for kids 4 and under, in the military? then no charge..3251 S.Miami Ave

Five: South Miami Concert;: hear music by Brooks Reid, Irue Irie and more..there will be clowns for the kiddies as well as face painting and plenty of games
5 pm. till the sun sets and fireworks begin...booths will be set up with foods from around the world

Free... 6100 SW 67th Avenue., South Miami

Six: Come to Calder Celebration: See the Thoroughbred horses race, enjoy a barbecue and take part in a multitude of games which will include a junior program for the kiddies

This fun all begins at 11:30 am....Calder Race Course, 21001 NW 27 th Ave., Clubhouse admission, $4.00..Grandstand, $2.00..Free for children 17 and under, adults admitted free when accompanied by kids..

Seven : Celebration on Miami Beach: There will be a new citizens ceremony in honor of all those who become US citizens on this special day... fireworks will take place just off shore..an exciting sight from the beach...Food vender's will be offering all kinds of special foods and treats

7:30 pm..Free

Eight: Baptist Hospital Extravaganza; There is fun to be had at this hospital on the Fourth....hear Ira Sullivan play with his contemporary jazz band as they perform beside the lake. Food will be available for purchase from vendors featuring goodies from around the globe...Fireworks at sundown Side note, I can see these from my house..:)

6-9:30 pm...Baptist Hospital, 8900 North Kendall Drive, 786-596-2302....Free

There are many more celebrations going on here in Miami but most of these are unique with many of the special foods that will be sold and featured
