The Janitor is a well loved character and television viewers cannot seem to get enough of him. To understand his popularity, think of Kramer from Seinfeld and how the audience reacted whenever Kramer would slide through Jerry Seinfeld's door. The one episode of Scrubs that was recorded in front of a live audience it was easy to hear how much people loved The Janitor. The audience clapped and screamed as The Janitor rolled onto the screen via a mop bucket.
The Janitor is not seen much on Scrubs and tends to make short appearances but he makes up for it with talent and his ability to make you laugh every time he opens his mouth and says something that once again makes one question his sanity.
What we know about the Janitor from what he has said and what we have seen at different times is that he was once a trophy winning runner. He has a father that he does not get along with and who pushes him hard and criticizes him. The Janitor tends to make up lots of stories about him life and in one episode he found out that the rest of the staff has never believed a word of it and in truth everything he has said about himself was a lie, except for being a runner.
At times the other staff on Scrubs has made The Janitor feel like he is worthless because he is not a Doctor and since then we have learned that The Janitor wishes to have more respected and would like to be a Doctor. In many episodes he has pretended to be a Doctor and at one point he wrote and introduced himself as Dr. Jan Itor, a play on the word janitor.
In his spare time The Janitor loves to work with pets. One very big reason he seems to be insane sometimes is because that work involves The Janitor killing and stuffing pets and sometimes making household items out of their carcass. Needless to say, his hobby creeps out the rest of the Sacred Heart staff.
The biggest reason we continually see The Janitor is because instead of spending his days working at Sacred Heart, he spends his time thinking up new and interesting ways to torture Dr. John "J.D." Dorian. From the very first episode of Scrubs where The Janitor thought that J.D. had put a penny in the hospital sliding doors, he has made J.D. his nemesis and never misses an opportunity come up with a plan to knock J.D. down a peg.
No matter what happens, The Janitor always feels like J.D. has somehow wronged him and one example is an episode of Scrubs where J.D. asked The Janitor a riddle to prevent getting beat up. The riddle was, "Two coins make up 30 cents and one of them is not a nickel". The answer to that riddle is a quarter and a nickel. One coin is not a nickel but the other one is. Once J.D. explained the answer, The Janitor became angry because he felt that J.D. had lied to him when giving him the riddle. He retaliated by wrecking J.D's scooter and asking a riddle of his own.Neil Flynn is a great actor and he constantly adlibs most of what comes out of The Janitors mouth and this makes The Janitor a great character to love or one you love to hate and it also makes Neil Flynn a great actor.
