My first idea is to go as a "cereal" killer. This will allow you pretty much all the creativity you can think of. All you need is card board boxes, a fake knife, some fake blood, and decorations for the box. If you can not find a box large enough to fit in it will work to attach several boxes on the inside with a bit of duct tape. After you make it the right size you'll want to cut hole big enough for your arms, legs and neck. Then get the color paper you want from the local craft store. I suggest getting the rolled paper because it will look better then taping paper together. Cover the box with it and start decorating. You can even glue cereal on it and have fun with the fake blood. You can get fake blood for a dollar two at about any store around Halloween.
My next inexpensive costume is to go as a hippie. All you really need to do is take a trip to your local thrift store. They will undoubtedly have plenty of ensembles to choose from. You can usually pick up a couple of pieces of clothing for only a couple of dollars in the thrift store. Another idea is to get a white t shirt and a tie dye kit. They sale these at department stores in the the craft section. They will cost around ten dollars on average. You can choose to style your own hair if it is long enough. A cute up flip would work nicely. However, wigs are available to add to the look nicely.
Animals have always been a popular costume idea for kids. Well, a little variation can make them appealing for adults also. There are a few different options to choose from. If your more conservative pick a dance leotard in the color of the animal you want to go as. These won't typically cost anymore then ten dollars. If you're more the adventurous type, you may choose something a little more risky. A white baby doll or other lingerie would be a good choice. Then you can buy tail and ear kits at any store that sells Halloween costumes. These average about four or five dollars. All you need now is hair and make up. For a cat you just need pretty shiny eye shadow and a cute black eye liner. You can use them to add whiskers or shape to your eyes. You can just do your hair in any style you like or even spray it with temporary dye to match the animal.
Anything dead or bloody is a popular favorite on Halloween. These costumes are easy and fun. You may choose to just go as a suicide and put fake cuts with fake blood on the wrist or neck. You can also add to it by changing characters. For example, a dead bride. You can pick up an outdated bridal gown at thrift stores for under fifteen dollars. To add to the look use a pallor cream or even baby powder. Both are quite affective.
Witches and vampires are a valued part of Halloween history. They are also some of the easiest costumes to pull off. A modern day vampire can wear almost any goth or even normal clothing. All you need is a little light powder to make your skin look a bit unnatural and fangs. You can get these for only a one or two dollars. It may look a bit more realistic with a bit of black blended around the eyes and on the lips. The look will cost around five dollars. For a witch all you need is a black or dark dress and a hat. The hat's vary in price, but there are a lot of options to match your outfit. You can do your make up however you want. You can be sexy or scary. Brooms are a good addition, but remember if you go out they will easily get left or lost.
