I often drove by the White Palace Grill on my way to the Home Depot in the South Loop neighborhood of Chicago. Each time I was dying to go inside, but was on another mission. Little did I know what I was missing!
The White Palace Grill serves up a diner style American breakfast that is simply wonderful! The building stands alone and on the corner of Roosevelt and Canal Street. It is a white building and inside you will find booths, table, and of course stools at the bar overlooking the typical diner grill.
We always manage to get a seat rather quickly, so waiting is not an issue here. The service is awesome and if you are a coffee person, then you will love it. I always sort of judge a diner on its coffee and this coffee is not bitter, not too weak, or too strong. This is the perfect cup of coffee in the morning. Plus, they fill it ever other sip, so you never run out!
I almost always get the Chorizo Skillet. It is a combination of ground Chorizo, onions, peppers, and potatoes all cooked together to form a yummy meal. On top you get your choice of eggs cooked any way you like. On the side is 2 pieces of toast dripping butter! You can't beat that.
A popular dish at this Chicago breakfast diner I have not tried yet is the chicken ptarmigan. Yes, this sounds odd for a diner, but people even order this at breakfast, so it must be rocking. I generally see about 7 people with this meal each time I am there, but I can hardly resists the breakfast here, so I need to make time to try that one!
If you love biscuits and sausage gravy, then you will be happy to know this is on the menu as well. The biscuits are split open and then topped with gravy, which is a must!
Prices for meals are below $10; my favorite skillet is under $8. Another great tip is that if you head here on a Sunday for a late breakfast, then right across the street is the Canal Street Farmers Market full of all kind of yummy fresh foods perfect for soaking that grease up later!
If you are staying in downtown Chicago, then the White Palace Grill is a $6 cab drive away or a $1.75 bus ride down to the South Loop a mile or so south of Downtown and they are open 24 hours a day!
