Tips and Secrets to Buying for Less!

Hillary Marshall
Everyone knows that having children is expensive, and clothing them is a large part of that equation. In todays world for many reasons most families are on tighter budgets than ever before and it becomes harder to keep up with our expenses. Children grow rapidly and most of the time when the seasons change they require an entirely new wardrobe from shoes and coats to under garments. However, one need not be discouraged by the rising cost of clothing, there are many ways to cloth your child without going broke.Being a single mom for many years, I became very savvy when it came to shopping for clothes for my daughter. I learned several tricks of the discount shopping trade that have helped me keep my daughter looking stylish without spending a fortune.

If you can anticipate what your child's size will be the next season, you can save tons of money by shopping the end of season clearance. Most stores clearance mid- way through the season to make way for the next seasons inventory. Last year I bought my daughters winter jeans at Old Navy on clearance for five dollars a pair. I knew her size ten jeans were getting a bit snug so I bought size twelve and this year winter rolled around and she a plenty of brand new jeans. I also got her a winter jacket for twelve dollars at Boscovs. Not that it has ever happened to me but, I do anticipate that someday she may grow really fast between two seasons. In the event that ever happened I would sell my discount purchases for a profit on Ebay.

Ebay is another great way to save money on your childs clothes. I am not big on used clothes, so I search using the keywords NWT ( new with tag ) or just new. I have gotten brand names for ridiculously cheap on Ebay, but it does require a little more patience than shopping at a store. Looking for auctions with a low starting bid and reasonable shipping cost are key to getting a good buy on Ebay. I try to factor in what the entire cost of the item would be after shipping before I place my bid. The last thing I purchased on Ebay was a pair of pink velour pants, total with shipping I paid five dollars and some change. The pants retailed for almost twenty dollars so the savings on those pants was considerable.

As your children get older, particularly with girls they become brand conscious. I try not play into this to much, but I do try and remember that I too was once a young girl with the desire to wear brand name labels. Getting brand names for less can be tricky, but there are many resources for the brand conscious budget shopper too. There are websites that specialize in discounting brand names. You will probably spend more money than if you trolled Ebay for the brand name or bought it off season at the department store, but utilizing some of these sites can be a bit easier. A couple that I have found are Webclothes.com, Overstock.com and Clothesandthings.com which are all worth looking into.

Many of the major stores we shop at have great clearance as well. It may be a bit harder to get seasonal items, but it's not impossible. Jcpenny.com has an outlet on their site that I have used for years for everything from bedding to clothes. Sears. com has an outlet online as well, and I get a lot of Bobby Jack stuff for my daughter on there. My daughter loves Bobby Jack clothes, but they can be pricey when buying them retail. I also check the clearance on the websites for my daughters favorite stores like Limitedtoo.com, Oldnavy.com, Abercrombie.com and Thechildrensplace.com, that way I can get her some of what she wants at a price I can live with.

My personal favorite place to go for bargains and discounts both online and retail is Kohls department store. Kohls.com and their retail stores clearance prices are just downright cheap. Best of all they sell mainly brand names, so you are really getting your dollars worth.

Almost any store you shop at has a website and nine times out of ten that website has a clearance section. You may have to do a bit of navigating, but you will probably find it if you look. At the end of the day though, bargain shopping is all about being resourceful and patient.
