Best Christmas Gifts for Autistic Children

Marilisa Kinney Sachteleben
Choosing gifts for children isn't always easy; if a child has Autism Spectrum Disorder, choosing a gift may seem impossible. I teach autistic and emotionally impaired children and here is my list of best gifts for children with autism.

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder have heightend sensory perceptions. What may feel or sound good to an non autistic individual may be over-stimulating to an autistic child. Conversely, autistic children often have distorted perceptions or dulled perceptions. Noises and sounds sound different. Some may be upsetting to an autistic child. Person with Autism Spectrum Disorder process sensations and perceptions differently too. The best advice for choosing gifts for autistic children is to understand how different stimuli affect them. Here is a general list of items that typically appeal to autistic children.

Squishy, bumpy toys that are tactilly stimulating. Be sure to choose safe non-toxic toys because many autistic children, especially younger ones will put the toy in their mouths. An autistic child feels like he is always teething and loves to chew on toys. Also, don't choose toys that may break off and cause the child to choke.
