Cod love a variety of bait. If you know that there haven't been a lot of people about and giving them a variety, Cod love Black Lug Worms. But, their won't touch this stuff if they have other options. These slimy creatures will stay fresh if you keep them in water and go fishing the day you get them, but after that they are barely good for chumming the water. Might as well give them to some birds, or toss them in for the good of the rest of the ecosystem.
For a perfect bait, that Cod think is the best stuff out there get yourself some Peeler Crab or muscles. These are easy to come by, especially if you are in the norther territories. The muscles are right there on he jettys and piers, hanging out (quite literally). They are the easiest bait to find, and if you can't get the peeler crab they are what the3 cods are looking for. Both of these should be kept as live as possible, but if you can't get the deep frozen kind. Once they thaw, they feel, look, and taste exactly as the cod like them.
These are the absolute tried and true bait, but it doesn't mean there isn't more out there. Try some of your favorite bait, you never know the Cod around your neck of the woods just might like that stuff. Just as people, fish absolutely love certain things but they'll try new stuff. I've even seen a person catch a cod off a piece of spaghetti, but it didn't happen twice. So go out there and have fun Cod fishing.
