Best Day Hikes in Anacapa Island, Channel Islands

Sea Life and Island Views Make This a Memorable Hiking Experience

Rachel de Carlos
Best Season: Year-Round, but Spring is best to see everything green and in bloom.
Distance: 2 miles round trip on Loop Trail
Difficulty: Easy with well maintained trail

The start of this hike is actually at Channel Islands Harbor or Ventura Harbor. You'll need to take a 1 hour shuttle boat ride over to Anacapa Island, but it's all part of the adventure. Island Packers operates a shuttle. Give them a call to ask for departure times and rates. (805) 642-1393. Both harbors have plenty of free parking as well as great restaurants and shopping.

Anacapa Island has a good trail for a family outing with plenty of variety in the scenery. On the way to the island it's very likely you'll see porpoises and seals. The first part of the hike involves going up the sea cliffs via 153 stairs. Once you get to the top, the island is fairly level and the loop trail is well maintained and easy to walk.

If you go in the Springtime, the native plants are green and the wildflowers are in bloom. Hundreds of seagulls are sitting on their nests right off the trail. They are very protective of their eggs, so be aware they will be aggressive if you leave the trail and threaten them in any way. If you go late in Spring, you'll see the seagull chicks as well as some unhatched eggs. With hundreds of seagulls nesting, there are plenty of bird droppings. Some hikers have mentioned a slight odor, but others say the view, the sea caves and arches, the crystal clear water, and the plant and marine life are worth it.

From the trail around the edge of the island you'll see Harbor seals and sea lions sunning themselves on the rocks below. You can either walk along at your leisure using the self guiding nature trail or take advantage of the narrated tours given by the Channel Island Park Rangers. Contact them directly for more information: (805) 658-5730.

To be as comfortable on your hike as possible, remember to wear appropriate clothing for the time of year as well as a good pair of hiking shoes. For suggestions on footwear, see my article on Best Hiking Boots.

Remember to take along water and snacks, sun block, a hat, and your camera. If this short hike isn't enough for you and you'd like to do a little something more, contact Channel Islands Kayak Center for information on a 2-3 hour kayak trip around the island. For something a little less ambitious, spend an hour or two snorkeling before heading back to the harbor. Whatever you choose to do on Anacapa Island, it will be a day you'll always remember.

Such great info! I like how you gave the distance and difficulty as well. We usually choose 2-3 mile hikes when hubby is up to it. We have to take 1-2 breaks for our 8-year-old, but the kids love it!

I'm a blobby home-body, but hope to go, one day, to Tangiers Island. That's within the range of possible for me... The image you've put up is really nice!

Hike? Did you say hike? But then I'd be too tired for Zumba.
