Picking the right breed of dog can be difficult. Below are a few pointers followed by a variety of breeds in which all would make good running dogs. The most important thing to remember that not all breeds are cut out for running long distances. The best dog breed type for running should be short haired, medium built, and weighing around 50-70 pounds. For the long distances, breeds in which are bred for hunting and working can run longer distances. When looking for that perfect partner, you must also look at the physical and genetic features of the breed. Mixed breeds are usually the best due to the these hereditary disorders.

Greyhounds are the best known running dogs. They are well known for their running ability. They can run great distances.These dogs are breed for hunting and racing. They are the fastest breed of dog due to that this breed has higher levels of red blood cells than other breeds. The red blood cells carry oxygen to muscles. Due to this higher level, the greyhound is able to move more oxygen faster from the lungs to the other muscles. They can can run up to 43 mph.This breed is generally healthy and long living dogs. This breed don't often get diseases. Although heredity disorders may occur but are rare. Greyhounds usually live around 10 to13 years. The males of the breed weigh between 65-70 pounds, while the females weigh between 60-65 pounds. This is an intelligent breed of dogs and becomes attached to their owners. They are great for families . They get along with other dogs, children and other pets. They bark very little. Greyhounds are also very friendly, even to strangers. These are the best breed of dogs for a running partner.

Weimaraner breed is a dog that was bred for hunting. They were used for hunting large game, such as boar, bears, and deer. Males usually weigh 70-85 pounds, females weigh between 55-70 pounds. Weimaraners are fast and powerful dogs. Weimaraners are protective of their family. They can be very territorial. They must be socialized when young to prevent aggression. These dogs are not as sociable towards strangers as many of the hunting breeds. The weimaraner breed are highly sensitive ,intelligent, and are problem solving animals. This breed requires high activities such as running. These dogs tend to be high strung and often wear out their owners. Owners need patience but yet remain firm. Weimaraners are kind to children. However they can knock down smaller children while playing. The breed is so full of energy. Due to they are hunting dogs. they may not always tolerate cats. Most will chases and kill any animal their backyard.

The Whippet is one of the fastest dogs.The whippet breed is a member of the sight hound family. They are active and playful. Whippets are physically similar to a small greyhound. These dogs weigh between 25-45 pounds. The life span is from 12-15 years. Whippets are typically quiet and gentle dogs. They attach to their owners and are friendly to visitors. Since they don't snap they are also great with young children. Due to their friendly nature, they have been used in aged care facilities. This breed will attack cats that stray into their territory. That is unless they have been brought up living with a cat.Whippets have been called a "poor man's racehorse." Whippets are outstanding running dogs and are top competitors in many racing events. Whippets are quiet therefore they are well suited to apartment life. However like like all dogs they need regular, healthy exercise. They are generally healthy, and are not prone to many sicknesses that affect other breeds. The heart of a whippet is large and slow beating. This can cause false concern.

The Saluki is one of the oldest known breed of domesticated dogs. The salukis are admired for its beauty. They have great speed and endurance. The Saluki is another sight hound. The saluki's strength lies in its great endurance and stamina. They are not the fastest sight hounds, but they can run for much longer than most of the sprinting breeds.

The Afghan hound is a very old sight hound dog breed. This breed has a thick, fine, silky coat.The temperament can be aloof and dignified, yet happy and silly when playing. The Afghan Hound has many cat-like tendencies. It is not slavish in its obedience as some other breeds. This breed of dog has a leaning towards independence. These dogs sometimes choose to ignore commands.This breeds lifespan is about 12 years.

Dalmatians are well muscled dogs with high endurance.This breed is active, energetic and intelligent. They have athletic build and unlimited energy and stamina. Dalmatians are alert and have a great endurance for speed.They can weigh between 35 to 50 pounds, both male and female. These breeds life span is 12-14 years. They were used as guards of war by guarding borders of Dalmatia. They have high guarding instinct but are still friendly. These are very loyal dogs.They are skeptical of strangers and other dogs. Dalmatians have strong hunting instincts and make great coaching dogs. Temperament is stable and outgoing however shyness is a major fault for this breed.

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a breed competing in many areas including field trials, conformation, hunt tests, obedience, tracking and agility. It also serves true to its roots as a hunting dog. This breed has great ability and stamina. This breed is intelligent and learns at a high speed.They are considered stubborn and difficult to train. This breed has a bright and happy disposition. They are intelligence, good sense, and have affectionate protective nature. Some of them can be quite vocal when happy. Temperament is inherited. Chesapeake bay retrievers can make excellent family dogs when socialized correctly. This breed can be more assertive and willful.This breed is also known for their large and powerful chests. Their chests are used to break apart ice when they dive into cold water while duck hunting.

German short haired pointer is a hunting breed. The breed has powerful hind legs. This makes them move rapidly and to turn quickly. This breed of dog was developed for family life and to be a versatile. Their temperament is intelligent and bold. These dogs are affectionate and cooperative . They are easily trained. This breed is usually very good with children. German short haired pointers even act like puppies when they are elderly. They enjoy interaction with humans. These dogs are grateful and appreciate active families who give them plenty of exercise. Most of these dogs are excellent watchdogs. The breed gets along well with other dogs. Since these dogs have a strong hunting instinct, it may not be around other small pets such as cats or rabbits. This type of dog is recommended for families. They are loyal, fun and friendly. These are tough dogs and are careful and protective of young children. The lifespan for this breed is 12 to 14 years.

Doberman Pinscher is known to be intelligent, alert, and a loyal companion dog. Careful breeding has improved the temperament of this breed. Doberman pinscher are energetic and lively. This breed is suitable for companionship and family life. These dogs can weigh between75 and 115 pounds as males, the females can weigh 60 to 90 pounds. Doorman's are athletic . They have a lot of endurance and speed. The dog was originally intended as a guard dog, Doberman pinschers are targeted of stereotype of aggression and being furious. This breed was was originally bred for these traits for personal protection. Many of this breed in North America are gentle and loving dogs.Doorman's have the highest rank in train ability.

Labrador Retrievers are the most popular breed of dog in the world. This breed is also the most preferred assistant dogs. They are exceptionally gentle, energetic, intelligent and good natured. Labradors are considered great companions for people of all ages. This breed has a high level of tolerance and patience a for children. The Labrador breed is one of the most dependable, obedient and multi-talented breeds in the world to train. Males can weigh from 60 to 80 pounds and the females can weigh from 55 to 70 pounds. This breeds life span is from 12-15 yrs. These dogs have alot of energy and are up to any challenge to burn off energy and spend time with their owners or family.

    We have a Siberian Husky and she is an amazing running dog. Not as patient a breed as a Lab or some of the other breeds, but for running, there aren't many out there with more energy.
