Best Dressed Women at the 2007 Academy Awards

Sarah Senghas, M.A.
This year's much anticipated Academy Award were held Sunday, February 25, 2007. Walking the red carpet were most of the celebrities that I hoped to see. While there were some disappointments (which will be detailed in my "Worst Dressed" list), the women dressed pretty well. I have compiled a list of my top 10 picks:

Naomi Watts. Naomi Watts walked the red carpet with long-time friend Nicole Kidman. Ironically, Nicole made my "Worst Dressed" list. Naomi Watt's gown was beautiful. It was white with a black sash-type feature above the waist. While this was one of my favorites, it did have one feature that I wasn't fond of. The dress has partial sleeves, only covering mid upper-arm to elbow. This was a similar look that you would achieve with a shawl. Overall, though, I liked Naomi's look.

Tracy Edwards. Tracy was wearing a pale-colored halter-style gown which was embellished by multi-colored jewels. The gown emphasized the torso nicely, and was figure-flattering. Tracy carried a simple black clutch to go along with the gown. While the majority of the dress was rather simple, both in style and in color, the jewels on the chest balanced it out nicely.

Cate Blanchett. Cate wore a slinky, multi-layered gown. This gown was a charcoal gray, made of a shiny, reflective material. Over this was a sheer black fabric which was embellished with roses. The dress had one wide strap over her left shoulder. This one-shouldered look was a popular one among the stars.

Isla Fisher. Isla appeared in a satiny, forest green gown. It was a strapless number with a black, bejeweled empire waist band. Several women sported this look. The color was very complimentary of Isla's skin tone and hair color.

Jennifer Lopez. While I am not usually a fan of Jennifer, I thought her dressed worked well with her. The upper chest area, as well as the empire waist was made of large jewels. The dress itself was a light, almost eggshell color, and not very form-fitting. This is another example of a simple dress, with jewel embellishments.

Jodie Foster. Jodie foster made her appearance in a slate-blue, halter-style gown. The dress was flowing and has a fairly significant train, but it was not fussy, like some of the other trains that night. It was a timeless dress for a timeless actress.

Jessica Biel. Perhaps a little biased, being a long-time 7th Heaven fan, I thought this bright pink dress was a good choice for Jessica Biel. This bright halter-style gown really brightened-up Jessica's face. The satiny black waist band was a nice contrast to the pink.

Portia de Rossi. I was a little unsure of this dress at first, but after seeing it several times, it grew on me. Portia's gown was dark-colored, almost Grecian-inspired, with a braided halter. It had a very low-cut back, which showed off Portia's figure.

Emily Blunt. Emily arrived in an amazing strapless gown. The gown was a dark sparkly blue. This slinky dress is not for everyone, as it does not seem very forgiving of figure-flaws, but for Emily, it was perfect.

Rachel Weisz. This was my favorite. This satiny, golden gown was just beautiful on Rachel. The gown has a modest train with some ruffles, but they were not very prominent. It was strapless, with pretty details on the top. This simple yet elegant gown was by far the best of this year's Oscars.

There were many more beautiful outfits that I left off, as I only had ten spaces. I tried to single out the more elegant, flattering, or just pleasing gowns of the night. This is my list for the Top 10 Best Dressed Women at the Oscars for 2007, do with it what you want.
