The Urban Homestead: Your Guide to Self-Sufficient Living in the Heart of the City

The Urban Homestead was one of the first green living books I ever picked up and I really enjoyed it. It's a valuable resource for individuals or couples looking to start making their own living situation more "green", especially for the majority of us who live in major cities and suburbs across the United States. Authors Kelly Coyne and Erik Knutzen discuss the basic concepts of sustainable, eco-friendly living in an urban environment, while providing specific examples and instructions on different green projects. Particularly memorable are some of their projects on composting, raising poultry and other lifestock, rooftop gardening and water recycling. It's a great read on the basics of urban, environmentally-friendly, homesteading.

Available for around $10 on Amazon (at the time of this writing), Living Green is a great book for daily ways to make ones life as eco friendly as possible, with realistic tips and techniques. Not everyone can afford a giant solar panel array or the time to make their own electric car, and Living Green recognizes this. It chooses to focus on more doable environmental projects, and realistic changes most Americans can make in their day to day lives. Author Greg Horn writes on common sense ways to avoid the dangers of non-organic food, problems with plastic water bottles and wiser alternatives, carbon filter use for tap water and much, much more, allowing the average American to "green" their lives. It's worth a read and shouldn't take too long, at 171 pages.
