Most people in Amherst, Massachusetts, flock to the July 4th parade and festival on the campus of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, campus. UMASS borders Amherst and Hadley, and the fairgrounds-like atmosphere behind the UMASS stadium is perfect for thousands of Amherst residents to attend, eat great food, play kid games, and settle in for the best fireworks in the area. Bring a blanket and a basket of food, and get ready to settle down on the grass with thousands of others. If fighting off mosquitoes isn't your idea of fun, though, consider parking your car along Route 116, parallel to the stadium, and watching the fireworks from there. Some people swear those are the best seats for watching Amherst fireworks.
Others head to the hill off East Pleasant street, behind the dorms, and park next to the water towers on the UMASS Amherst campus. The fireworks, from this vantage point, and quite distant, but gorgeous, with an unobstructed view between the residence hall buildings. The bonus to this East Pleasant Amherst view is that parking is easy, and traffic is virtually nill. Trying to get out of the parking lot on the stadium grounds at UMASS Amherst after the fireworks will take a minimum of forty-five minutes to an hour, so the sacrifice in view might be worth the speedy drive home.
Loads of parents watching fireworks from the East Pleasant point bring glow sticks, snacks, and drinks (along with kids, of course!) when viewing Amherst fireworks from the best spot in town. After the fireworks, Amherst can be mobbed; consider heading north to Greenfield for ice cream at Bart's Ice Cream, on Main Street. For that matter, a trip up Route 63 to Northfield, Massachusetts' famous Northfield Drive-In (in continuous operation since 1948!) might be the perfect end to July 4 festivities. After fireworks, a movie or two will zonk the kids out, and leave some of the best fireworks memories in their minds as they dream about your Amherst area adventure.
