Best Fishing Spot in LaGrange, Georgia

Amy Stepp
The one thing I love about LaGrange, Georgia is the fact we are surrounded by the West Point Lake. All we need to do on a Sunday afternoon is just pack the cooler and load up the van with the kids and head on down to the lake for a fun filled day of cooking out and fishing fun! One of the best places to go around West Point Lake is near the damn over at R. Shaefer Heard campsite.

Off of US 29 you will follow the signs into the park to 101 Shaefer Heard Park Drive. Once you have come up on the check in building you will find yourself entering a quite piece of land located on West Point Lake. With over 117 camping sites on the property you can pull your camper up to any one of the lovely views of West Point Lake.

Each campsite is located right on the lake which is walking distance from your camper to the great fishing experience you will find in West Point Lake. Just kick back and sit down in your lawn chair with your cooler next to you for the best fishing experience.

On the campsite you will find every need to make this fishing trip a vacation stay. There are many boat ramp access throughout the park so do not hesitate to hitch up your boat before heading out! Once you are there just empty your boat out onto the lake from the ramp and drive it over to your campsite so you can have it ready to use whenever you need it!

Many playgrounds are located throughout the park in case you have children with you and they just don't find fishing as interesting as you do! There is also many other activities located throughout R. Shaefer Heard park such as hiking trails, tennis courts, skiing, swimming and surfing.

Full bathrooms with showers and laundry rooms are on site as well, and dump stations are located throughout the park. If you need to make a phone call, just in case you loose service in the mass forest then there is a pay phone at the check in gate. The gates lock every night at 10 pm and reopen in the morning at 7 am. Security is always on duty throughout the park during both the day and night!

Reservations for this park must be made four days in advance and if you are planning to stay for the weekend then there is a 2 night minimum stay and a three night minimum stay during a holiday. However, I advise you to make your reservations a few months in advance because this park does fill up rather fast!

Now if you just want to head to the park for the day to catch in some great spots on West Point Lake but you really don't feel like making a overnight stay out of it, you are still allowed to go into the park, however it will cost you a small fee of $3 to stay in the park for the day! Which is not bad considering all the great amenities this park does have!

So you decided to make a weekend trip out of this and you need some extra supplies before heading out to the lake, then you can always stop on into the Picnic Basket off of Roanoke Road for any fishing supply need you may have. Don't have your fishing license yet, then you can purchase it at the Picnic Basket. They also have floats, coolers, snacks, drinks and so much more for you here. If you need more information from them on what they have to offer you can call 706-884-1483.

If you need to do a little more detailed shopping then the nearest grocery store is the Piggly Wiggly located in the SawMill Plaza off of Roanoke Road. There you will be able to stock on all your needs for your whole stay at R. Shaefer Heard park!
