Our daughter is now three weeks old and we've had a chance to use both types of diapers. While both brands of diapers are good, I have noticed some differences in them. I have also priced both Pampers Swaddlers and Huggies Baby Shaped Fit diapers in stores. The diapers are comparable in price, but are they comparable in quality?
Let's take a look at each diaper's claims. On the Pampers website, Pampers Swaddlers diapers claim to have a five star absorbency rating. They also claim to have a liner that keeps runny messes away from baby and soft overlapping fasteners. On the Huggies website, Huggies Baby Shaped Fit diapers claim to have a leak lock to absorb moisture faster. They also claim to have all-around stretch for a snug fit.
The first thing I noticed when I used the Pampers Swaddlers diapers was the liner in the diapers. It looked like a weaved quilt and was very soft. Just as their website claims, Pampers Swaddlers diapers absorbed the runny bowel movements that my newborn often has. The Huggies Baby Shaped Fit diapers do not leak, just as their website claims. However, Huggies Baby Shaped Fit diapers did not absorb the messy bowel movements as well as Pampers Swaddlers diapers. I also noticed that after sleeping in the Huggies Baby Shaped Fit diapers all night, my newborn would have little gel beads from the diapers on her bottom.
Pampers Swaddlers diapers claim to have soft overlapping fasteners. However, I noticed when I was using Pampers Swaddlers on my daughter, the fasteners seemed rather stiff. They were also pretty large and could easily scratch her delicate skin. The Huggies Baby Shaped Fit diapers had small, soft fasteners. These fasteners are small enough not to scratch the baby.
On the cosmetic side, Pampers Swaddlers diapers were slightly stiff on the outside. This made them seem bulky between my daughter's legs. The Huggies Baby Shaped Fit diapers were more conforming to the baby's body and overall softer. However, they seemed to balloon when wet. This made them a lot more bulky than the Pamper Swaddlers diapers.
Both Pampers Swaddlers diapers and Huggies Baby Shaped Fit diapers are very good overall. They both have qualities that I like in them. They both are similarly priced. Pampers Swaddlers diapers have excellent absorbency. They just need to work on making the diaper fasteners a little smaller and more soft. The Huggies Baby Shaped Fit diapers are very form fitting and have wonderful fasteners. They just need to work on making the diaper more absorbent without having the gel beads.
Since we have both diapers in our household right now, we've come to a compromise. For daytime use, Huggies Baby Shaped Fit diapers are the better choice. They have the flexibility to move with my daughter, which will be a huge plus as she gets older. At night, when our daughter will be wearing the same diaper for a long period of time, we use the Pampers Swaddlers. They will keep the moisture and any bowel movements she may have away from her. This should help deter diaper rashes.
So, overall both Pampers Swaddlers diapers and Huggies Baby Shaped Fit diapers get a huge thumbs up.

Post a CommentI am having my baby April of 2011, we found out we are having a little girl. I have been buying Diapers only, as I will get tons of clothesa nd stuff at the shower. I have 2 boxes of Huggies and 1 box of Pampers Swaddlers. From what I have read so far, pampers seem to hold the most, and provide more protection. I better lay off the huggies for now, and stock up on Pampers! Thanks for the article, VERY helpful for a first time mommy! :)
My son was born 4 days ago and i have had the chance aswell to use both Swaddlers and Huggies and i have noticed Huggies Absorbs ... nuthing?
Whilst Swaddlers ( the bring given by the hospital) did a far better job than huggies, and absorbed a great deal. Planning on giving away my millions of huggies...
Will never use Huggies again, even if I am given them for free. They do not close properly; the fastening tapes do not stick if they overlap each other. Also, they leaked from the sides making a mess of baby's clothes. Pampers are a million times better!
Our newborn has trouble with the pampers swaddlers. The weave fabric really sticks to his skin. I have to use water to get him loose. I will try the Huggies.
Neither diaper is the best!! Cloth diapers are the best! better for your babies bottom and better for the environment
Pampers Swaddlers are always my first choice. Huggies work great too. You certainly are right about the fact that Huggies won't hold a runny mess. Been there, done that.Great article.
My sister just had a baby - great info for her!
Great article! I will keep this in mind for future children :)
