Having a baby can really wear you out, but you need essential energy and nutrients to supply both you and your newborn after you give birth. While you don't need to totally change your diet after you give birth, there are foods you should be adding to your diet to make you feel better and help out your baby with their nutrition as well. Particularly crucial if you are breastfeeding, learn the best foods for you after you have a baby, and why they are so great for you.
You can't go wrong with salmon. A natural anti-inflammatory, salmon lubricates your joints so you can easily and freely move to take care of your new little one. Protein for energy and healthy fats that are great for you and your newborn, dine on salmon and feel your energy rise! A great bonus- salmon has higher levels of DHA (naturally present in breastmilk) that is needed to help your baby's developmental growth. So eat your salmon, which is low in mercury, and be healthier for the both of you!
Lean beef is another essential meat, because iron is easily lost as a new mom and you need that iron to keep up your energy and to function normally. One of the best ways to achieve your iron needs is in lean beef, or at least an iron supplement. Talk to your doctor about adding more iron to your diet for more energy and focus on your baby.
Brown rice is a carb you can get behind, that will leave you feeling full and give you energy without packing on those extra pounds. if you are trying to lose weight in a healthy way, eat brown rice and incorporate healthy proteins into your diet, like beans, so you can feel fuller longer and still be able to amply supply your baby with healthy breastmilk and energy.
Snacking on blueberries and oranges boost your immune system, and when mommy is healthy, so is baby. Vitamin C is crucial to your immune health, and blueberries contain lots of antioxidants to protect you and your baby from harmful free radicals. Plus, oranges are a natural laxative to help your sluggish digestive system (due to hormones) get back on track. Drinking tons of water for this helps as well.
If you hate salmon, you can eat eggs for that oh-so-healthy DHA. In fact, eggs are a great source of protein, which means energy, and the fats in eggs are basically healthy. Eat a slice of whole wheat bread for fiber and energy on the side and you have a great meal perfect for a new mom!
