Best Foods to Eat for Stress

Abby Willow

Stress is the number one sign of aging, and comes with serious consequences. Lack of sleep, being unable to focus, sexual disfunction, even appetite suppression, stress conquers all aspects of daily life. Learn how to battle stress successfully with foods that fight stress to put you back in the game of life.

Certain foods are great at lowering blood pressure and boosting your immune system, which are both key in working together to battle stress to begin with. Berries of all sorts (like strawberries, blueberries, etc) are great at giving you that 'feel-good' taste and smell to put you in a better mood mentally as well as giving you a jumpstart physically. When you feel good mentally, your stress levels go down, and you have further control over those hormones that are putting you on-edge.

Finally- carbs are good for you. Really. There is a reason why people call these types of foods 'comfort foods'- potatoes, pasta, and breads. Carbs encourage your brain to produce more seratonin, which is a chemical that balances out your, well, 'happy' feeling. So don't skip breakfast when you're stressed- sit down to that whole-grain toast and kick butt.

Spinach is a great supplier of magnesium, which helps battle the fatigue and headaches that come along with stress. Spinach pasta, anyone? This food is great at battling stress, and is also superb in iron as well. Salmon is high in magnesium too- so enjoy, and watch your stress melt away...

Almonds and pistachios battle stress, simply because they taste good and provide distraction. Beyond that, they have healthy Omega-3s which gives your immune system a great boost. Fatty fish will do that for you as well.

Want something to wash down all this stress-fighting food with? Why not have some black tea, or even hot chocolate, both of which can reduce your stress and make you feel warm and toasty at the same time.
